So what if- Another war breaks out (before the last movie and before Megatron gets a sword and so on and so forth) and the two factions have to join together. So later on the bots are approaching the threat and their artifact (special weapons such as the phase shifter) get taken(from something like a magnet or a power) including the matrix of leadership and it turns Optimus back into Orion pax but not just mentally, but physically as well.
