I Must Survive
Part 6

After several attempts, the scooter started up again. The engine came to life with the shrill of a dying animal. I collapsed to the ground, too tired to even feel relieved. I was drained.

The scratch was at eye level. I jumped up and rubbed it hard with the toe of my sneaker. It was an old scooter, already covered with numerous dents and scratches. It might go unnoticed.

When I stood upright, one of my ankles twinged with pain. Only then did I take time to look myself over for injuries. Fortunately, I wasn't seriously injured. There was a small cut above my ankle bone that was still bleeding. My thighs and waist would be sore and stiff tomorrow. But it was nothing I wasn't already used to.

Taehyung watched me park the scooter and step inside the eatery.

Did he notice? I grew nervous, but I chatted to owner anyways, trying to be as nonchalant as possible. The next delivery would be coming in soon. I had to go out again before I had even warmed up.

"Hey.." Taehyung said as I approached the scooter. Did he see the scratch?

"What?" I asked, a little too loudly.

Taehyung hesitated before answering:
"I have a favour to ask."

"Favour? What favour?"

My phone rang before he could reply. I held up a hand and turned around. When I answered, my mother spoke to me, her voice thin with worry.

"Dad tried to go outside today. He fell... Can you take him to the hospital, Namjoon-ah?"

I closed my eyes and tried to ignore the bitter anger rising up in my throat. Annoyance fluttered in the pit of my stomach.

Large snowflakes fell on my face, brushing past my cheeks.

Here I was, going up and down the town, in waether that wasn't fit to be delivering in, to earn almost nothing. The cut on my ankle hurt and my thighs were burning. But I had to go out and deliver again. It was the only way I could even get that little bit of money.

It was better than nothing.
