S1 E2: Girl Meets Boy

Start from the beginning

Riley's POV

I'm back home, having lunch with the family as I listen to Auggie's day
"It was a good day. And then my friends treated me nicely. And then my teacher measured us and then I'm growing. And then Jenny Lewis loves me. I think because I'm growing"
"It was a good day for me as well. A girl asked me my number. Then I got a B in Math and then another girl asked for my number" I decide to tease him
"Too bad that the only girl who doesn't want your number is Maya" he blushes, hard
"And I don't want hers, she's so annoying"
"Yeah, sure. It wasn't a good day for me. And then my friend pulled my hair out. And then my teacher took my phone away. And then my teacher was also my father"Auggie tries to cheer me up
"At least you're growing" mom joins the conversation
"Honey, please don't come apart. Look at this as a beautiful opportunity to spend time with your family"
"Hello, Riley"
"How you doing Auggie?"
"Want to hear about my day? It was a good day"
"Mom!"
"Forgive her, Auggie. She misses her telephone"
"Well, then she can have mine" he gives me his
Toy Phone and I pull a button
"The cow goes..."
"Moo!" I sigh
"I'm not gonna make it"
"That's what your father thinks"
"She can't"
"Honey, please don't make your father right. It's no good for any of us when your father is right"
"She's right"
"Why are you really doing this"
"Because I want you and your friends to become human beings. And I believe that by doing this, you guys can learn to become real human beings" the intercom buzzes and we hear Maya's voice
"Hey, losers, it's Maya"
"Except her"
"You know what? I am going to do this. I can get through this whole thing without making a text or a call" I walk over to the intercom, and press the button
"Come on up"
"Of course you can, sweetheart. And you know what? You're already a wonderful human being, but every so often, little tests like this are gonna come up"
"Why?"
"Because it's your father's job to give you little tests. And maybe along the way, you guys are going to learn a little bit more about yourselves" Maya finally comes in
"Yeah, like I've learned that I'm actually really okay with all of this" how can this be?
"You don't miss your phone, Maya?
Maya:    I was the only one in class without a smartphone anyway, and now I kind of feel like everybody's even" the intercom buzzed again
"Farkle"
"Be ready in a minute"
"And Lucas"
"Ready now!" I exit with Maya but after a while Elliot joins as well.
"What are you doing here?" Maya asks him
"Dad told me to join you to watch over your monkey business"
"Ugh whatever" I feel something different between them. Maya looks more shy while he seems to be trying to read her and discover all of her secrets. Did something happen between them?

Maya's POV

"What is this place?" I ask
"This is where the ancients stored all of their wisdom" Farkle replies
"Look at all of those..."
"Books" Elliot completes the sentence. Things are weird between us after that hug. At least for me, he saw my vulnerabile side. Nobody else saw it except for Riley, but she's my best friend. Nobody else had to see it, especially her brother. I don't wanna talk to him and make things worse, I'll just pretend nothing happened.
"Look" Lucas pulls out a book from the shelf, and blows the dust off of the cover
"Tales Of Human Interaction"
"We'll take it" I grabs the book
"Thanks, quickdraw" I drop it on the table "Farkle, do whatever you do with that"
"You mean read? Chapter One..."
"Oh, I'm bored out of my mind, let's go to a movie" An old lady shush us, making all of us gasp in surprise
"There's one of those ancients now" Farkle walks over to the librarian
"Oh, wondrous gatekeeper of the knowledge, we are travelers from another time and place"
"Sixth grade middle school"
"And eighth grade" her brother adds
"We wish to partake of this information from your great hall of wisdom"
"Do you rent phones?" she just shush us again
"There's no one here but us" Lucas says
"Why do we have to shush?" I ask
"Let me handle this, Maya. She obviously likes it quiet. Hello, book lady" Oh no...
"Well, hello. And who might you be?"
"I might be Farkle"
"Would you do me a favor, Farkle?"
"Oh, you know I will"
"Why don't you go over there and... Shh!"
"Well, that's disappointing" he goes to the table to sit down with the rest of us. Farkle and I leave Riley and Lucas alone to sit on the bay window while Elliot basically disappeared
"This chapter's called 'Disconnect To Connect'" I read the first sentence
"Not until we put down our phones, switch off our computers and look in each other's eyes we won't be able to touch each other's hearts." Yeah, like that's going to work on anybody
"People used to need places like this. Now we can hold everything that's here in a little device we can put in our pockets. I don't even need to look out this window to know what phase the moon is in or where the stars are" Elliot says as he comes out from god knows where
"Yeah, well, I don't have a phone like that, I just have the actual sky"
"Oh, I'm so sorry for you. You're at a real disadvantage. That can be the basis of our presentation, okay? Wanna read back the notes?"
"What notes?"
"You weren't taking notes"
"No"
"You know, why bother? Without a computer, all we have is a pencil and a pad. What could we possibly do with that?" he grabs the sheet of paper from me, his words surprised me, I've never heard him talk like that
"Woah"
"Let me see" Elliot shows him my drawing
"Maya. I had no idea"
"Yeah. Neither did I"
