With a loud grumble and afterwards a thud of something hitting a wall, Rin threw her alarm clock through her room. Yet another day had arrived. The sun creeping through the curtains and shimmering with a faint light onto her face. She was quick to get up from bed, it was after all a very important day for her. Finally she wouldn't be a kid anymore. finally she was aged 10! Storming downstairs, jumping off the stairs with two at a time she shrieked with happiness. A birthday, after all, is meant to be a very happy occasion and Rin planned to make the best out of it. She was going to play outside with her friends. She was going to eat a lot of sweet food and candy. She was going to be the center of attention and everyone would adore her! She had even picked out a cute dress. It was a light blue dress with elaborate decorations, engravings and the likes. The moment she had seen the dress she had fallen in love with it and decided that was the dress for her.
"Hi mom! Hi dad! You two are up early!".
Her shrieking only interrupted by her high-pitched and happy voice echoeing in the kitchen. her parents were already up. They always were up before the sun had even risen. They always claimed to be up for work, but never had explained what work exactly they did. All Rin knew was that it took a lot of the time she could have with her parents and she hated work for it. It was almost as bad as school, she imagined. All others liked school, you were with your friends, you learn things, you get to eat food and play all day. Rin saw it differently, she had to sit still in a class whereas she had too much energy to discharge. The classes were boring and long and she never learnt anything she didn't know already. She always grasped new things incredibly fast and even was called a progidy by some of the teachers. She didn't care, all she wanted was to go home and play with her cards and read books. Her parents had many nice books with funny looking runes and pictures in them. The cards were exactly the same. She didn't understand anything of it and the books were written in a language she didn't understand. Her dad had always told her they'd teach her about the books when she was old enough. Well, she was becoming 10 and was old enough! She was going to ask about the books later today.
"Hey sweetie. I'll prepare you some toast and jelly!". Her mother beamed with a bright smile. Toast and Jelly, Rin's favorite. her enthousiasm only stoked up even more after this. Her father quickly approached her, placed his hands on her sides and scooped Rin up. it always made her feel funny in her stomach and made her laugh.
"How's my little princess doing? did you sleep well? That dress looks lovely on you!". Her father's deep voice only partly breached Rin. She was too enthousiast to pay attention to everything. she just giggled at the feeling in her stomach.
Soon the three of them were eating toast for breakfast. Her parents had taken the morning off to be able to eat breakfast with her, but they were going to leave soon, Rin knew. She'd be all alone again as it would've been a saturday. Being alone isn't weird for her, she's spent plenty of days on her own since her brother left several years prior. Her parents never wanted to give a solid explanation, they always avoided the question or answered with "He had work to do". Rin didn't like this, her curiousity only burning brighter than before everytime her parents avoided the question. Rin quickly finished off her toast and wailed in happiness.
"Can we play a game? Please? pretty please! I want to play a game! Can we play with the cards? I like the matching game! It's fun!". A waterfall of words escaping Rin's lips as she'd keep rambling untill she'd be out of breath, leaving her gasping for air. her parents simply shook their heads. They simply didn't have the time as their work once again was more important.
"When will you tell me what your work is? I want to know! You never give me an answer... I want to know!".
"We'll tell you when you're older. It's a bit hard for you to grasp now". Her mother smiled kindly. Rin simply pouted in response and looked down. she mumbled something in herself before she got up from her hair and drooped back to her room. She could her a gentle sigh behind her before she dragged herself up the staircase again.
