As I'm sitting here with Hayes, I keep getting all these weird feelings in my stomach. And I know what they are. Butterflies. And that scares the shit out of me.
I don't want to like anyone, I can't. I'll just get hurt. But looking at Hayes, I can't help but to think of what it would be like to kiss those plump pink lips.
Who am I kidding, he probably doesn't like me anyways.
Me and Hayes have been sitting in the shallow water for about 2 hours now, and it feels like we've known each other forever. I love talking to people like this. Just learning basic facts about each other.
"Favorite color?" Hayes asks me with a little smile on his face. He's just so goddam cute. His smile that lights up his whole face, and reaches his eyes. Let's not even get started on his eyes.
"Umm orange," I tell him.
"Huh. I was expecting the classic pink or purple. But orange. Interesting."
"And not bright orange, but like sunset orange." I quote from what Peeta said in Catching Fire.
"Oh god, you're so cheesy," he laughs with a silly grin on his face. "It's too cute."
I lightly chuckle at his cuteness, and rest my head of his shoulder. I take in a sigh and look at the sunset. This day was really sucky, but I've smiled more today than I have in a really long time. And to think it's all because of this guy I'm sitting next to.
"Ansley. Oh thank god you're okay, I need to- oh." I turn around to see a panting Shawn with a confused and upset face. Why would he be upset. He doesn't get to be upset, he did that to me. I tense up next to Hayes, and he feels it. He grabs my hand, and even now, I still get butterflies.
"What do you need Shawn?" I ask with quite some bitterness in my voice.
"I just umm... you know, never mind. I'll just see you when you come home," he says with a hurt expression. I feel a pang in my chest. I shouldn't, he signed me up fort worst night mare. But deep down I know he did it because he was worried about me.
"I'll text you," I tell him. He looks at me with a sad smile and starts walking to the boardwalk.
I sigh and look towards Hayes. He's still holding my hand, but he has a look of confusion on his face. Shit. Explanation time.
"That was Shawn. He's my best friend. I came here a year ago with nothing and he kinda took me in. So he's my roommate and he's helped me through a lot of stuff. But anyways, we got into a fight earlier and I came here and here we are." I tell him.
He's quiet for a few minutes before he whispers, "Why did you come here with nothing? What happened?"
My blood runs cold. What am I supposed to tell him? Oh yeah, you know my sister just killed herself and my dad went all psycho so I came here away from it all.
"Um.. family problems," I nervously chuckle back. He can't know. Not now. He replies with a simple "oh." For the first time with Hayes, there's an awkward silence. It's getting dark, so I decide it's time to leave.
"Umm, it's getting late, I better go." I stand up and turn towards him awkwardly standing in my wet jeans.
"I'll walk you home," he says. He reaches out signaling me to help pull him up. I grab his hand and hoist him up. With me being stupid, I pull to hard and start to stumble. Just as I'm about to fall, Hayes catches me so I'm looking directly at his gorgeous eyes.
"That was close. Good thing I was there to catch you." That was such a simple saying, but it felt like there was so much more meaning to it. My stomach went crazy.
Hayes started to lean in, and as much as I wanted to kiss him, I couldn't. I can't do that. I'll get hurt. I step out of his embrace, but grab his hand so thinks aren't as awkward. I look over and see him glance at our intertwined hands and give a little smile.
Once we reach my door, he turns to me and grabs my other hand, so he's holding both of my hands now.
"I think it would be a really good idea if we hung out again sometime, somewhere other than the beach," he says with an adorable smile on his face.
"Like a date?" I ask messing with him. He instantly blushes and looks down at his shoes. Got him.
"It doesn't have to be if you don't want I mean-" I cut him off by reaching up on my tiptoes and kiss his cheek. "I'm kidding Hayes. I'd love to."
He looks up and gives me a childish grim. He asks for my phone, and he puts in his number then texts himself so he has mine. He then pulls me into his arms and it was probably one of the best hugs I've ever had.
"Night Hayes," I say before I walk inside. "Goodnight Ansley. Sleep tight," he says winking at me. I walk inside, and lean against the door. The butterflies never seem to leave when I'm around that kid.
I walk upstairs, change into my pjs, and hop in bed. Right before I fall asleep, I get a text from Hayes:
From Hayes:
Goodnight beautiful
I find myself drifting off to sleep thinking about a certain blue eyed, brown haired boy and a smile on my face.
