Catherine, being Kate's best friend along with Mia were beside themselves with worry. They couldn't do a thing to help her and hated seeing the person be anything but that, the state she was in.
Catherine took it incredibly hard, the Christening of Louis had been pushed ahead to September. Kate couldn't attend as one of his godparents and Catherine and William wanted her there, Kate hadn't missed any Christening of their children. They weren't about to start now.
Arthur had started to act out as well, not having his mum or dad at all, except for the small hour in the evening. And it wasn't like his mum could do anything. Kate was the one to scold him if he wasn't behaving. Catherine and William did their best, even Carole jumped in along with Kate's mum and grandmother, even Glen's mum. But because he didn't see them as much as he did Catherine, Pippa, Carole or Camilla or any other female figure in his life. He could only be comforted by them when he cried for his mum and when he asked for his dad. So it was on the morning of the fifth day. The number of dead had risen above the 200 now at 211 confirmed dead, that William decided it had been enough.
Arthur had clung to his leg that morning when leaving KP. "Glen, Nele has brought over some clothes of you last night. Catherine is expecting you." William told him as he walked into his sister's hospital room.
"what?" Glen asked, thinking he hadn't heard him correctly, for five days everyone had kept pushing him to go home, to go to Arthur. He knew it wasn't fair to his son, but he just couldn't do it. He couldn't leave Kate to handle his son and tell him everything would be alright when he wasn't even convinced of that himself.
"You heard me, Tif if downstairs in the car waiting for you. Spend some time with Arthur please. the little lad doesn't know what's going on and he keeps crying for you and Kate. She can't go to him right now." William asked him, he had no idea what he would do if it were to be Catherine lying in that bed. Seeing Kate was already hard enough, but seeing his nephew crying all day long, it wasn't right.
"Kate wouldn't want this, if she wakes up and figures this out, she'll kick your ass all over the place," William told him with a small chuckle and shake of his head as he took his sister's hand. Leaning over he kissed her cheek and whispered his usual: "Hey sis, hope you're doing better, wake up soon." The machines were still breathing for her, her heartbeat could still be heard throughout the room. Nothing much had changed much in the last few days at all since her transfer. Except for the three failed attempts to wake her up and get her to breathe of her own.
"I know, but I just can't leave her," Glen told him with conviction as he shook his head. "I know, but I'll be here, if anything happens I'll call you. Tiff will bring you back, just go to Arthur for a few hours. He misses both of you and Kate isn't the one who can take him right now. Take a shower, have something to eat in a normal manner and be with Arthur." William told him with a begging tone as Glen nodded his head in defeat. William would be the person that he couldn't go in against. He knew Kate as one of the best. He was right Kate would kick his ass so hard if she found out what he'd done during her comatous state.
"Just a few hours." Glen finally agreed, rising up from his chair and William let out a relieved sigh. "That's all we ask." William agreed, his brother and parents had returned to Ireland the day before, having to return. And there was no certainty that she'd wake up either
The only ones still here were her grandparents and Mia. All the others had returned but called in several times a day. They came in around noon every day to sit by her side as well though. And as William took the chair on Kate's side after Glen had left he let a tear roll down his cheek all alone and he knew he could always be himself with Kate. She was his little sister and she never judged.
