Misunderstandings

The last one to hit the cafe’s entrance will be the waiter………or waitress, depends.” Said Abhijeet while pointing at the narrow entrance surrounded by vine climbers.

“Not happening.” I whined and everyone turned to see what my problem was.
“You know, I am bad at running!” I argued.

Amaya sulked in the whitish shade of the sky, giving me a disappointed look.
She basically teached me all sorts of sports and ‘running’ was the basic element to all of it.

“Okay fine! I am not whining.” I sighed to make Amaya laugh and pulled up my socks.

I can do it! Whole year of training can’t go in waste.

“Alright, so. Ready, Get-set, GO!” Abhijeet shouted and we all seven ran like it was the last time we’ll be able to run.

Actually, it pretty much is our last run together. We all are graduating this evening at 8 and it’s already 12.

“I knew it!” I exhaled. I was the last one to reach and Zoya, the first, our friend and also a National level athlete.
Did they really think that I can win against Zoya?

“Now, Karni would-” Abhay paused to catch his breath, “become today’s waitress!” He completed.

Abhay, another member of our group. Well, it won’t be an exaggeration if I called this, a “gang”. We all seven: I, Madhu, Aman, Abhay, Zoya, Shoaib and Abhijeet are partners in crime for 2 years now.

Well, the crimes were always done by other six, I only helped them ‘cause we are friends and this is what friends do, right?

Always being there when others fall, chilling around, talking about people we love and people we  hate and comforting each other when sad. This is what friends are for.

If I wouldn’t have made it to this college, I would have never felt the pleasure of  a friend’s presence.

Mom always said, “It’s the friends we meet along the journey that helps us appreciate our efforts.” I always laughed on this because Mom also didn’t had any friend or should I say, after she married Dad and gave up her well-off life, all of her friends left. But she still believed that having friends was a necessity.

I never understood her back then but now, I think I know what she was trying to get at. If she’ll see “The New Me”, she’ll be so proud.....I miss her.

“OMG! what is it with all these people today? Are they all graduating?” Zoya exclaimed looking at the vast crowd  ahead of us, in the cafe.

The crowd is huge, indeed. I don’t think we’ll be able to get a seat inside. We did hear about the cafes’ popularity in Mumbai but we never expected this much.

“Looking at the crowd, Madhu and Zoya, you go with Karni and we all will look for a place to sit.” Shoaib suggested and we all agreed.

I took Zoya’s hand and Zoya took Madhu’s and we started making way between the crowd to reach till the counter.

“What a disorganised crowd! Shouldn't they at least be in lines if they are here to order?” Madhu showed her displeasure and we all sighed.
