"Rose this is my daughter Reiju." Sora introduces us, "Rose comes in twice a week and keeps me company. She the only reason I am keeping up on my reading list." Sora lets out a light laugh.
I jut my thumb over my shoulder, "I can go to a different client first. Give you some family time." I urge.
Sora's family rarely visited. Sora was the wife of the esteemed Judge Vinsmoke, business tycoon. She always waved it off saying that her family's business was very important to her husband and her children so it was okay if they didn't visit.
She had mentioned before her daughter and one of her sons visited semi often. This must have been one of the rare occasions.
"I actually have to be heading out. Farther wanted to run some ideas by us this afternoon." She leans down and kisses her mother's forehead, "Remember there is some food in the fridge for you. I'll be back as soon as I can."
Her white designer sundress swayed with her hips as she approached me. Reiju smiled sweetly at me, "Thank you for taking care of her. I can't even begin to tell you how much I appreciate it. If there is anything I could do for you, please let me know."
She closes the door as she leaves.
How she said it felt ominous but she appeared to mean it.
What a strange lady.
I shrug off the weird feeling and give Sora a large grin, "Your daughter visited! That is super exciting."
She pats the bed by her inviting me over, "Yes and my son sent food with her."
"Oooooooo." I coo, "Your fancy chief son made you food. I might have to steal it." I joke poking her knee.
She never gave too much detail about her family. I think it was too hard for her. Made reality sink in and when you're a terminal cancer patient, you tended to avoid reality at all costs, at least that was Sora's case.
I give her cold hand a squeeze, "It's beautiful outside today. Do you want to go outside and read? You can sit next to me and make everyone jealous about how tan you look."
That earns me a warm laugh, "That sounds perfect dear."
Using a walker and my assistance, Sora slipped on a soft blue robe and transferred over to a wheel chair. We made our way down the halls.
"Anything new in your life hun?" The kind blonde questions to fill silence.
Sora didn't know about what had happened to me. It was nice to pretend that my life was normal with someone.
"Well a boy gave me his number yesterday." I comment pushing the elevator button.
She turns her body to look at me with amused eyes, "Do tell. What's his name? Is he handsome?"
I can't help laugh at the gossipy attitude, "I'll tell you but this has to stay girl talk."
She raises her hand in promise with a serious face, "Scouts honor."
I push her out of the elevator and hip check the automatic door opener that led outside, "Well." I start, "His name is Sanji and he is very handsome. Golden hair like yours but he has these stunning stormy blue eyes that defiantly make you get lost at sea. If you get my drift." I hoped the corny joke would make her laugh.
It did.
I pull up to our normal bench by the rose gardens, "He taught me how to dance and was completely respectable about it, but there was something sad in his eyes and I couldn't place what it was." I elaborate handing Sora her book from the pouch on the back of her wheel chair.
"Oh?" She comments accepting the book seeming very intrigued by this stranger's life.
I nod half in a trance thinking about the sorrowful blue swirls in Sanji's eye, "I think he has family troubles. I asked him about his family and his muscles wound up real tight."
I pull my sketch pad out of my bag, "I did send him a text this afternoon and he did reply so progress I guess."
Sora slips her bookmark out of her book, "So boyfriend material or?" She asks not looking up from her book with a knowing smirk on her face.
My stomachs felt queasy at the mention of it dating someone, "Ugh. After my last relationship I need a break from dating but I don't really have any friends here and I was thinking maybe he could be my first friend."
I blush furiously embarrassed I said that out loud, "That sounds terrible. I am sorry."
She places a boney hand on mine, "It is okay to not want to be lonely Rose. This Sanji boy seems like a perfect place to start. If he doesn't treat you right, I'll give him a piece of my mind." Sora threatens shaking her book.
I twirl my pencil in my fingers and laugh, "I will hold you too it."
We sat there together comfortably with the white noise of the other people in the garden filling the silence.
My pencils scratches against the paper as I sketch Sora's profile. She was only person in this town that I had the urge to draw.
People were my favorite to draw. It was always a challenge to really capture someone's emotions on their face.
Like now, Sora was worried. I could tell by the faint lines that drew across her forehead and the valleys between her eyebrows. Her lips were pressed a bit. Not enough for a normal person to notice but to the trained eye you could see it. You could also tell her jaw was set by the muscle tone in her face.
"Hey Rose." Sora breaks silence.
"Yes." I turn up from my sketch pad and look up to Sora's face.
Her eyes were focused on a hummingbird zipping from flower to flower; her voice was distance, "If I can a day pass, would you mind taking me somewhere?"
It seemed like a silly question but how she tapped her fingers on her wheelchair showed me that there was more to the question.
"Of course. I can't turn down a girl's day out. Where would you want to go?" I question turning my gaze to the hummingbird that was flying carefree.
She smiles wickedly like a child that figured out how to outsmart their parent, "There is a certain restaurant I've always wanted to go back to."

Okay first slice of life. Let me know how the pacing is going. Or if you guys prefer longer chapter like my other works.
This first few chapters turned out to be more of a set up for the character. Things start to pick up the pace next chapter!
