A Little Bit of Help

Start from the beginning

"He seems like a perfect gentleman Rose." Makino's sudden voice in my ear makes me jump, "Maybe you can make a friend here."

I read the message over and over again, my brain trying to find some hidden meaning in it, "One step at a time."

I frantically look up to the clock to see if I can make a quick escape and I noticed that the world was on my side today. The session was over, "Thanks Makino. I'll see you next week."

I stand up and slip my tan bag over my head nearly sprinting toward the door.

"Good luck at the hospital." She calls out before I close the door behind me.

A huge relieved sigh escapes my lips.

Glad that is over.

I had been volunteering at the hospital two days a week. I kind of just floated in and out of rooms of patients that wanted to be read to, taken outside, or just wanted someone to talk to.

My job pretty much was to raise moral.

I felt safe at the hospital. There was always so many workers around, anyone could hear you call out for help.

Also, most of the people I took care of needed a walker and were too weak to cause any shenanigans.

It was something Makino suggested for me to do to immerse myself in people again and get comfortable talking to strangers.

But in all honestly, I just enjoyed it. It was nice to be the highlight of someone's day or be able to be there for someone. Most people in the hospital were so grateful just to have someone around, they didn't care if I was shy and awkward.

When I got to the hospital, I went to the HR department to clock in and grab my name badge.

I pulled a white cardigan out of my bag and quickly slipped it on.

Hospitals were always two things: very clean and very cold.

My brown gladiator sandals flop down the linoleum floor echoing eerily down the hallway.

Even though I did enjoy volunteering very much, empty hallways like this in hospitals still gave me the heebie jeebies.

The stretches that I was on the barren hallways were too quiet and my brain always thought about the dismal event that had happened in my own life in hallways like this one.

I clap the sides of my pale cheeks snapping myself back to reality.

Everything will be fine. Relax.

When I approached the private room, a smile grew on my face. I got to see my favorite patient today.

The door was cracked open and I gave  a rhythmic knock on the door frame, "Sora, it's Rose. Do you mind if I come in?"

"Yes, please come in!" A happy voice chirps.

I push open the heavy wooden door and see Sora's thin frame sitting up in bed.  She was a gorgeous woman with beautiful shoulder length golden blonde hair that covered one of her sapphire blue eyes.

Sickness had made her grow pale and hollowed her face but I didn't think that really took away from her beauty.

Sora was gorgeous inside and out. She treated me like her own daughter whenever I came in to visit.

Today was the first time I had seen her with a visitor.

It was a young woman probably a handful of years older than me. I could tell it was her daughter. They looked identical down to the slightly up turned noses minus her daughter had rose pink hair.
