Hiccup Horrendous Haddock the Third, son of Stoick the Vast and heir to the throne of Berk, was board.

His father the chief had dragged his scrawny runt of a son to attend a big huge gathering of chiefs and rulers that only happened every decade or so. The seven year old didn't care why he was here, only that he was. Stoick had explained that at these gatherings, the chiefs and rulers of the surrounding lands present their son or daughter to the dragon ring once they reach the age of 15, where they must successfully get past a dragon and steal its egg to prove themselves worthy to rule. Once they reach the age of 18, they must then kill a dragon and by doing so gain the respect of their land and the blessing of leadership.

Hiccup looked around as his father talked to the chief of the Meathead tribe. The dragon ring was located in the center of the tiny island of justice. The arena had a metal cage like roof with pens big enough for dragons just outside the inner walls. It reminds me of our training arena back home, thought hiccup. Just then a boy about his age ran full sprint into him, nocking him over. He hit the ground with a thud.

"Oof."

"Sorry! I didn't see you there!" Hiccup looked up to see a boy with white hair and a blue shirt hold out a hand. Grasping the boys offered help, Hiccup heaved himself up and dusted his cloths off.

"Hi, I'm Jack, Jack Frost! Who are you?" The pale boy said, ginning.

"My name is Hiccup Haddock. Why are you here? I've been dragged by my father to attend this thing. What about you?"

He shrugged. "Eh, I was forced to, but at leased I have some freedom here instead of at home. Hey! Do you want me to show you around? There are some other people here who are the same age as us and will be proving themselves in the same years we do! Come on, I'll point them out!" Jack and he started walking around with Jack pointing out certain people.

"You see the red head over there at the archery ring? That's Merida from the kingdom of Dunbroch, and over there playing with the lizard is Rapunzel from the kingdom of Corona. Oh, and that's Elsa from the kingdom of Arendelle! Wow, I wish dad would let me fight with a sword! I'm not allowed to till I'm older." Hiccup and Jack watched as Elsa and a man with orange hair and a small mustache sparred. Elsa was doing pretty well until her opponent struck with side swipe and nocked her sword out of her hand causing her to fall down. She laughed a little as the man explained why she lost her grip. Elsa had long blond, almost white hair bradded back, with pale skin and a few freckles dusting her nose. She wore a blue dress with a navy ribbon around her waist.

Looking back to Jack, Hiccup said, "You've never touched a weapon before?"

He shook him head. "Nope. Father is determined to make sure I dont accidentally kill anyone till I'm 'more responsible' or whatever that means."

"Jackson Daniel Frost, get your butt back here right now!"

Jack jumped at the sound of his name and started to blush with embarrassment. "That would be dad. I'll see you around!" And with that, Hiccups new friend took off.

"Hiccup, come here! The first round is about to start!"

At the sound of his voice, Hiccup turned and walked over to his father as the crowd around the ring began to cheer. The first person to enter got the dragon egg with little to no burns and a few scrapes, but nothing to bad. The next person easily avoided the large reptile and got the egg very quickly. The next few people where the same, with either a scrape or a burn as they left the arena. The last person, a girl with blond hair, slowly entered the arena. She tried a more peaceful approach by quickly walking around to the back of the dragon before swiping for the egg.

She missed.

The dragon, did not.

With its long claws, and barbed tail, the creature pounced. Her screams were still ringing in his ears when they left the next day. In that moment, Hiccup was determined to prove himself to his father and not get eaten like that girl in the ring. He swore he would at least try to not die when it was his turn. Watching the water as the boat slowly traveled back to Berk, Hiccup sighed. He hoped that Gobber wouldn't make him clean the floor again. He really just wanted to make something. Thats what a forge was for, right?
