Imagine loving someone and not knowing if you were even allowed to. It was Alexander Hamilton's 21st birthday in two weeks, and that was the day he would learn the name of his soulmate. On your 21st birthday, you just sort of... know. No one is able to explain the feeling, though many have tried desperately to. Its inexplicable, you just wake up and suddenly you know who you are destined to spend the rest of your life with. No one is sure if their name literally pops up in your head by some sort of magic or what. But people do know that soulmates never go wrong, and trying to love anyone else is essentially futile.

Alex had dated many people -- both women and men -- in the past, just for fun. Dating seemed a bit pointless, though. The only reason to love someone was if they were your soulmate. Which is why he was so frustrated with himself for being completely and utterly in love with a boy by the name of John Laurens.

He hadn't meant to fall for him. In fact, they weren't even dating. But they were in the same college, in the same dorm. And every time Alex saw his face his heart began pounding and his stomach filled with butterflies. But he knew he couldn't say anything about it, because John was not 21 and neither was he. They had no reason to love each other yet.

But that didn't stop him from doing it, and it also didn't mean he couldn't spend every waking moment dreaming about his 21st birthday, expectantly waiting the name of who he was destined to be with. If it wasn't John... then so be it. But a secret part of him desperately wished for it to be.

---

John couldn't help but begin to draw Alex as he sat on the couch in their shared dorm. He was just so perfect, everything about him. He was beautiful, and kind, and of course a bit of a workaholic. But he managed to set that aside, because it was honestly sort of cute how amazingly passionate Alexander was about his writing. The thousands of words he wrote all over everything, his journal, in his laptop, on random napkins, on empty Chinese food boxes. He really wrote like he was running out of time.

It was terrifying to think that his soulmate might not be this cute boy he had fallen in love with over the past year. He had a month until his 21st birthday, and he knew Alex had a little less than 2 weeks until he had his. What if they weren't soulmates? They had sort of told each other how much they appreciated the other, but not in a 'we should date' sort of way. More in a 'it would be cool if we were soulmates but whatever, it's not like I'm completely in love with you or anything' kind of way.

He lightly shaded in the area underneath Alexander's eyes, that boy never seemed to get enough sleep. And he thought and thought about how amazing it would be if they really were destined to be together.

---

A week passed, and Alex was getting more and more nervous every day. He was watching a movie with John in their dorm, five feet apart on the couch because they were definitely not gay for each other. There was a light tapping on the door, presumably a knock, but it was very delicate.  Alex paused the movie as John swung open the door enough to only show his face.

Standing outside in a light blue sundress was Elizabeth Schuyler, looking nervous. "Hi John, is Alexander here?"

He opened the door more widely to reveal Alexander. "Hi, Eliza." Alex couldn't help but notice that she blushed lightly when she saw his face.

"We need to talk. Privately." Alex nodded, grabbed a jacket quickly, then followed Eliza to a bench in a small courtyard that was outside their dorm building. They both sat down feeling immensely nervous for two very different reasons.

"So, today's my 21st birthday and... you're my soulmate!" She squealed.

Oh no. This couldn't be happening. He and John weren't soulmates. Alexander felt his heart physically break, if that was possible.

"W-wow... that's... that's great, Eliza..." He mumbled and looked away so Eliza couldn't see the tears forming in his eyes.

"You don't sound very excited." She pointed out, masking her disappointment with a smile.

"I am excited! I'm just surprised, that's all." He wiped his eyes and forced a smile back. The air felt thick with awkwardness.

Eliza shifted her position. "So...Should we go on a date? Maybe tomorrow night?"

"Y-yeah, sure. I guess. Yup. Totally."

"What's wrong?"

"I just thought someone else was going to be my soulmate." He shrugged. "But it's ok, I guess we're destined to be together."

Her smile became slightly more genuine. "I guess we are."

---

When John heard the news, he was crushed. Heartbroken. He couldn't even respond, he just silently stood up and locked himself in his room. The two didn't speak to each other for an entire week. Then it was the morning of Alex's 21st birthday.

"It's John." He thought. "John Laurens is my soulmate." He sat up excitedly.

"Oh my God! John Laurens is my soulmate!" He exclaimed out loud, running into John's room. "John, wake up!"

"Hmmm?" He grumbled sleepily. He sat up and saw Alex rushing towards him, then they were locked in a kiss. John pulled away after enjoying it for a moment, thinking this would be his only chance. "Alexander, your soulmate... Eliza."

"You're right. How does that even work? How can you be my soulmate but I'm her's?" He looked confused, then pulled out his phone to text Eliza. John's expression matched Alex's, but he was confused for a different reason.

HammyHam: Eliza, John is my soulmate.

TheMiddleSchuy: what? no we're soulmates.

HammyHam: It's my 21st birthday. He's my soulmate. Are you sure there wasn't a mixup?

TheMiddleSchuy: idk

He wasn't sure how to respond, so he waited a minute for Eliza to say something else.

TheMiddleSchuy: i had fun alex :(

HammyHam: Huh?

TheMiddleSchuy: my real soulmate is Maria Lewis. but I love you! i think we can make this work!

HammyHam: Sorry, Liza. I don't think we can.

TheMiddleSchuy: fine. but i still love you.

HammyHam: We can still maintain our friendship?

TheMiddleSchuy: mhm. we'll see. goodbye, alexander.

HammyHam: Goodbye, Elizabeth.

John gave him a weird look "So...?"

"She lied to me. We're not soulmates, she just wanted to date me."

"Oh..."

The two sat in silence for a moment.

Slowly, a grin spread across Alex's face "I love you."

John looked surprised, but quickly recovered. "I love you too, Alex."

And they proved it to each other by sharing a kiss.
