This date is going well.

So far.

I venture to say it is going very well.

Check my hair in the mirror. Brush the wayward red curl across my forehead to be ever so slightly more wayward.

Very, very well.

My phone vibrates. A text. I glance. Molly. Who else?

How's it going?? she wants to know.

I thumb my reply: Going well

I hesitate.

Very well, I add.

I pause again.

Very very well.

I hit send.

Details?? she replies

Dinner

Duh. Where???

I can't help but grin. Barbat

Get out!!! No way!

So True

$o Xpen$ive!! Details!!

Later

What did you order???

Not the lobster. I wanted the lobster. I adore lobster. I'd make a mess with the lobster. Melted butter splatter does not go with this dress.

First date? Not the lobster.

Not the lobster, I send.

What?

Later. Must go. He's waiting.

Where are you?

Bathroom

He can waitttt!! Details! Pleeeeese!!

Gotta go. Kissbye!

I silence the phone, slip it in my purse. Molly will quiz me all night if I let her, demand play-by-play in real time. Too distracting. I'm nervous enough already.

Am I nervous?

No. Yes. Some.

I check my teeth for salad. No salad in my teeth.

I refresh my lipstick, smooth my dress.

Adjust the wayward curl again.

Hmm, is it still at wayward or is it wanton now?

And do I want wanton?

Or only wayward?

Or brush it back to cute?

Cute got me this far. Should stick with cute. I am cute. Cute is my shtick.

Going well. Going well. Very well. Very well indeed.

Stick with what got you this far.

Play it safe. Cute. Safecute.

Still ...

Are those gold knobs on the faucet? Real gold? Gold fixtures in a restaurant bathroom? A bathroom lined with enough marble to build a Greek temple, maybe two?

This place, it's unbelievable. Barbat.

I push the curl to wanton.

I study it. Do I really want wanton? I flinch.

Wayward it is.

Again I straighten my dress, the slightly sparkly midnight blue almost-see-through-but-not-quite Sarvacci.

(Well, okay, knock-off Sarvacci. Bargain rack.)

A last mirror check. Satisfied, I head back to the dining room.

This date is going so, so very well.

So far.
