Inside a room a soul was seen wondering. Her eyes lost and confused. Looking around the completely pitch black room, she wondered if this is what death felt like. A big space full of darkness and nothing.
In a second, the lights were turned on. The space that Piper once thought to be a black oblivion turned to be a regular room, similar to her own, but with no windows in it, contrary to her windy ones that always gave her the headache when she forgot them open.
"Oh." Was all she could say.
Looking around she tried to find other differences between the two. The walls were white, the bed covers were black, the various black and white pillows stood were they always were. Her mini fridge was still on the corner, her fluffy carpet, the one which she so many times fell asleep in, even the curtains were there, for no apparent reason and with no purpose however, they were still there.
While living, Piper had acquired a big sum of money. She was a successful writer, with many publications and a legion of fans, therefore she lived comfortably. Although her looks were not that bad and her personality was okay, she died single. Maybe because she didn't have the time to be socially active or maybe because she just didn't have the charms. She couldn't quite tell which. When writing her stories she could exude so much seduction, however once in real life she was more of the wallflower type of person.
Staring at her body she sighed. So she did die early in the end. One day upon writing another novel, she left her window open while she took her scalding hot shower. Once she came back she noticed that the rain had entered and drenched her laptop in it's liquid. Desperate she went to the rescue of her almost finished story only to realize it was gone, in the spite of the moment she forgot that although not working, it was still plugged in. Receiving a strong electric shock, her soul was sent away, as her body was found the next morning by her manager.
"At least I wasn't naked." She told herself, staring down at her fluffy white robe.
Looking around, she searched everywhere. They say that once dead you take nothing away with you. Her laptop was no different, however staring at the porcelain elephant on her cabinet she frowned. She couldn't bring her laptop to the afterlife but the useless porcelain elephant she had to paint in middle school she did. What kind of logic was that? Still, she calmed down. At least her favorite books were there. Reaching for one, she opened it only to find blank pages.
"What the...?" She said, taking another book, after another, only to find the same result. Blank pages. "So this is hell."
Putting all of them back to their place, she sighed throwing herself in bed.
"They say that one would rest once they die, so that's what I'm gonna do now."
Closing her eyes, she received a slight pain. Almost as if her brain was going to explode inside her head.
Containing a scream she was confused. She was dead why was she feeling anything.
"Welcome host." A voice said.
Looking around, Piper scream. There was no one else in the room. Was it the devil himself? Why? Although Piper knew that she was not the best person once on earth, she wasn't exactly the worse, for the devil himself to find her. She didn't harm animals, she was kind to people around her, she never killed a soul other than in her books and she even recycled. Why was this happening?
As tears of fear streamed down her eyes, the voice only sighed.
"I am no devil. Not even a demon. I have no name, however I do work for the system, so you could refer to me as such. I am will be your guide through your journey in this system."
Closing her eyes, Piper wanted the voice to vanish, however, as the intruder that it was, it stood there.
"You should not worry, treat me like your consciousness, like a voice giving you advice and advantages here in this system." The system said, slowly releasing hormones in Piper's brain in order to calm it down.
"There, there. Now, I will tell you all we are about."
Taking a deep breath, Piper didn't feel anything anymore. Getting up from the king sized bed, she sat straight in bed.
" You are in what souls call SAW, System Arc of Writers. This is where the few selected candidates are sent in the afterlife."
Confused, Piper raised a brow. She was in no way shape or form different than anybody. In her life she was the embodiment of regular, she was even less than regular, since she normally just lazed around and wrote once she was short on money. How could she enter the 'few selected' list.
"Host is right." The voice stopped her train of thought. Right, so now the voice could read her thoughts. Real nice. "For that I must apologize, host. Anyway, the few selected are prosperous writers, writers with the gift of destiny guiding. Every writer who dies is given a mission, however, once in a century a few selected writers are guided to fix destinies. Here you will enter a selected story and figure out how to cure the plot, this way the system will create goals for you, in order for you to gain points according to how good the system deems your storyline to be."
"And what is in for me? What will I do with this points?" She asked, trying her best to block the voice from her own thoughts.
Feeling a slight pain as she failed. The system proceeded.
"You will advance ranks. The ranking system goes from F to SS. You achieve them through points. Initially you have your luck measured, and since the worlds are chosen randomly, if your luck is high, you will have a better chance of a easier story, a bad one at that."
Lifting her brow, she was confused, the system still hadn't answered her question.
"The worst the story the easier it is for you to rewrite it and gain more points. In class F you are only allowed at the F arena, Once you progress, you will be allowed in the other arenas. "
"And what is so important about Arenas?" She wondered, what was so good about them to make her care.
"Let me put in a way that you could understand. Like in a company you have rankings, if you are an intern you are at level F, than you get promoted to A which is the CEO, then after that there is the Director, that is what an SS is. Once you reach the SS level, you are allowed everything. You can create your own paradise with unlimited things."
Trying to process everything inside her mind, she understood. The blank books, the lack of a laptop, she was at class F, she wasn't capable enough to have those kinds of things. God, she couldn't even have a door in her wall. She thought looking at the blank white wall on the opposite side of the curtains.
"And what happens if I fail a mission?" She asked, although it was motivating to know what was in for her, it was very important to know the outcome in case things went south.
"If host fails a mission, host will be punished by the deduction of points and a very painful punishment. If host fails a mission and has no points to be deducted, host will be sent to the Limbo of bad stories, where host will have to wait for another century in hopes for another host to appear and help host complete the mission. "
Feeling a chill down her spine, she could only think of spending a whole century inside a bad story, if she got bothered with living her own life for a day, who would say living the same plot for a century, she had not even lived a quarter of that.
"And how many people have been rescued in those stories." She wondered.
"Well, since normally because the hosts have been in the universe for so long, it's almost unidentifiable who is who, because once you get out of character you get punished, so not many."
Nodding her head slowly, she couldn't tell if she really wanted to do this.
"Host has to, she has to complete at least a challenge. However, I want host to remember. If host does not leave this Arena, host will stay alone in here."
Looking around, the books in blank, the lack of a window, the lack of joy, it was quite depressing. Sighing Piper shook her head slowly in agreement.
"I have a feeling host will like it." The system said. Transporting both of them to their first mission.
