Chapter 1

It was November 29 and my friends and I were spending the night at my treehouse because the weather was decent compared to the so far rainy year

" Renèe, Alex, hurry up, you're almost there!" I had to yell, because they were so far away.
" Dude, you said we were almost at the treehouse 2 minutes ago!" Alex complained
" I just said you're almost there. 2- wait 3 minutes ago I said I'm almost there." I hollered
" Well, it's not our fault we had to carry so many things when half of your stuff is already there!" Renèe argued.
"Nah," I countered " Only sleeping bags to sleep on and a first aid kit are already here. I still had to bring a blanket, my phone, food, more safety equipment, etc. and I have a lot of etc. stuff."
" What's the etc. stuff" Alex Challenged. She and Renèe were at the base of the ladder.
" Do you see how fat my backpack is?" I said, pointing to my backpack in more of a 'boi ' gesture. By the time Renèe and Alex were up the ladder. Alex looked at her backpack, then back at mine. My backpack was double the size.
"Oh. "Alex sighed. I pivoted so that my ' boi' gesture faced Alex. Renèe Walked over to my backpack and sat on it.
"Ruby, is the etc. stuff books- no your backpack is soft so it can't be." Renèe slid off of my backpack and started to unzip it.
"Renèe! That's rude! What if you find stuff!" Alex scolded, clutching her own bag.
"It okay" I told Alex" that's the zipper that takes up the most room. The only things in that zipper is my blanket and stuffed animals-"

"Wait," Alex interrupted "You still sleep with stuffed animals?"
"Have you not seen my bed before?" I asked
"I guess I forgot." Alex replied
"Besides, I'm using the stuffed animals as a pillow. Let's get settled in. And after we can roast marshmallows, with a candle"
As we set up our blankets and roasted marshmallows, we played many rounds of kiss marry kill, would you rather, and dare or die, because would you rather is just a game of truth or truth. After we finished 2 bags of jumbo marshmallows, and the sun was sleeping, we thought it was time to get some shut eye. I laid in bed until I could hear Renèe and Alex breathing deeply.

I remembered I put a bag of rubber bands in my backpack. Slowly I slid over to my backpack, carefully unzipped my bag, and took out the rubber bands and my phone out. I slowly crawled out of my blanket and went onto the balcony part of the treehouse. Out on the balcony there was a ladder that went onto the rooftop.

I put my phone in the bag of rubber bands and then put the bag of rubber bands in my mouth and climbed up the ladder. I got on the roof and sat on it. I took out my phone, played Spotify and put my earbuds in my ears. Then I took out a rubber band aimed it at the moon and shot it. I didn't see it come back so, I'm guessing it went far. I shot a few at some trees. Shooting rubber bands reminded me of last time I was here.

It was November 24, and my friend Sid and his family were staying at our house because they were in town for Thanksgiving. Sid, his dad, my dad and I were walking through the woods behind my house. My dad and Sid's dad were talking of how " beautiful" the woods and the landscape is, while me and Sid were catching up on stuff that happened in the past 2½ years. The deeper we walked in the woods the more at home I felt.

For some reason the shape and thickness of the trees stuck with me. (even though I'm near-sighted) As I was looked at a tree, for its unusual creep shape, I saw a weird carving in the bark of one of the trees, it sorta looked like a ladder. I look up following the ladder pattern. On the tree was a treehouse, like the one in " Ready Jet Go". I tugged on my dads sleeve

" Daddy" I said to get his attention " it looks like you don't have to build a treehouse for me" I turned around and pointed at the treehouse.

" That's strange" my dad said " I've never seen that there"

I could have sworn I saw a 'oh no' look on Sids face, for a millisecond, but then it washed away.

I walked toward the treehouse.

" Daddy, can we check the treehouse out?" I asked

"What if it's someone else's? " My dad reasoned

"Let them have fun, they're just kids." Sid's dad said

"Thanks!" I said, climbing up the ladder

"Wait for me!" Sid hollered trailing behind me

I got in the treehouse and stood on the balcony, instantly reminded of my brother's playhouse, but bigger, more me size. I walked inside the treehouse Sid trailing behind me

"I've always wanted a treehouse" Sid said " but I-my dad never had the time to build one."

" I ?" I caught the 'I' that he said

"Well... me and my dad" he stammered

I suspected something was up, but I kept my mouth shut.

I walked out of the treehouse and onto the balcony to look at the view. I noticed a rope in the trees. One way it just kept going for a mile at the least and in the other direction it stopped behind- the treehouse? I walked around and, attached to the treehouse was not a rope, a cord, hanging from the cord was a harness. Then it hit me it wasn't just a cord it was a zip line. I'm not a fan of heights, but a zip line was cool.

Later that night we told our moms and siblings about the treehouse and how they should have been there. I had the idea to go camping there, but the thing is our dads couldn't fit In the treehouse more or less get up the ladder. After significant debating our parent finally agreed we could go, under 2 conditions 1) I wouldn't act like a headless chicken and 2) Sid was in charge. Our dads walked us to the treehouse, when the sun was still setting- which was around 5:45. Me and Sid talked for a bit. About why we stopped being friends and our favorite memories as a kid. We came to this one memory of Sid teaching me how to shoot rubber bands. We went onto the roof and sid re taught me. I got a few bruises on my fingers, but it was one of those special moments that if you do it again, it won't feel the same way.

Suddenly a scream came from below forcing me back to the present.
