He didn't remember anything. The doctors said they had never seen anything like it before, complete and total memory loss like his. They kept him in the hospital, they didn't really think it was entirely safe to send him home yet.
Or maybe he didn't have a home. He couldn't really remember.
On the first day, many worried people came in to see him. First, an older couple that he assumed to be his parents, at least that's what they claimed to be, as well as two young children. The woman was sobbing, crying about the son that didn't recognize her and the tragedy that he didn't deserve. The man wasn't as loud, but he saw the same pain reflected in the man's eyes. The two little ones, a girl and boy, probably his siblings, didn't quite understand what was going on. They only looked with vaguely sad curious expressions as their parents cried.
Second, a group of five boys that became extremely confused when he wouldn't respond to "Taehyung" or the onslaught of nicknames that came afterwards. The tallest one, an intelligent-looking boy with thick-rimmed glasses and mature voice, talked to the doctor that had come in.
So I'm guessing my name is Taehyung. Taehyung thought this as the shortest boy of the group jumped onto him and encased him a hug that seemed too strong to come from his skinny frame.
"Tae!" The skinny boy exclaimed, tightening his grip around Taehyung's shoulders. "You're okay!"
"Uh... Yeah, I guess so..." Taehyung answered hesitantly. He didn't even know what happened to him, or who this boy on top of him was.
"Wait, are you not okay?! Should I not be on you like this?!" The boy sat back as the questions rushed out of his mouth.
"No! No, you're fine... It's just-" Taehyung wasn't sure he wanted to admit that he didn't recognize the boy, since his head immediately told him it was bad that he made the boy panic, even if it was only slightly. "Um..."
Taehyung asked anyways, his curiosity to know who these five boys were to him overpowering the voice in his brain telling him to calm the skinny boy that had jumped on him.
"Who are you?"
Taehyung hated the look that the skinny boy now adorned. When he had first hugged Taehyung, he seemed so happy, now the boy's entire aura seemed to fall. Despairing, that's the word Taehyung decided to put with the expression.
Before the skinny boy- or the other three standing by his bed- could respond to Taehyung's question, the tallest boy came back over from where he was talking to the doctor. The tall boy looked more composed than the skinny boy did, but he still wore a similar scared and worried expression.
"You really don't remember anything Taehyung?" The tall boy asked. It scared Taehyung a little bit that the boy sounded so calm despite the anxiety apparent in his eyes. The maturity that the boy carried around him made it seem more like he was another doctor rather than a highschooler.
Taehyung, realizing that the boy was still expecting an answer, shook his head no.
The tall boy's expression fell a bit more. Letting out a small sigh he spoke to the skinny boy that was still sitting on Taehyung's bed, "Get off him Jimin."
The skinny boy, Jimin, looked at Taehyung for a second, as if just staring at him for long enough would will his memories back. After that, he climbed off the bed and joined the three other boys with the tall one.
"So... Should we reintroduce ourselves?" One of the others spoke up for the first time. He wasn't much taller than Jimin, but his serious and somewhat threatening way of holding himself made him seem older.
Another one of the boys elbowed him in the side, seemingly for his indifferent tone. This boy, despite having an obviously masculine figure, was very pretty. That's the only word Taehyung could come up with for boy's appearance.
There was a bit of silence after that. But after becoming curious to put names to the faces he couldn't remember, Taehyung spoke up. "It would actually be really helpful. If you guys could introduce yourselves to me." Then to try and maybe bring the mood up just a little, jokingly added, "I had to have my parents introduce themselves to me too! I had no clue who they were!"
It does bring a few small laughs out of the five, but they still look overwhelmingly worried. Taehyung is getting a bit tired of all the worried expressions, but supposes he understands. It must really suck to look at someone you know and not have them know you, or themsleves, back.
The tall boy is the first to give himself a name. "I'm Namjoon, but you all call me Joon most of the time. I'm your older brother, but I didn't come with Mom and Dad earlier because I promised these guys I would come with them. I'm a grade above you in school, and you like to annoy me until I'm practically forced to help you with your English homework." Like Taehyung, Namjoon seemed to be trying to bring the mood up by joking around just a little bit. Though Taehyung was now embarrassed, he didn't even recognize his own brother!
The pretty boy spoke up after Namjoon, "I'm Seokjin, though you started calling me 'Jin' when you were really little because you had trouble saying the full thing. I'm Joon's boyfriend. But trust me, I'm better friends with you." Seokjin put on a sly smile as Namjoon pretended to be offended. Taehyung was glad that everyone was starting to act like things were normal, it made him feel less anxious about the situation himself.
After Seokjin, the intimidating boy introduced himself. "Yoongi." Seokjin looked like he may elbow the boy again, his lack of empathy starting to annoy the pretty boy.
But before he could quite get to it, the one boy that hadn't spoken at all yet butted in. He had bright red hair and a heart-shaped smile, he spoke enthusiastically as he explained, "Don't let his exterior put you off, Taehyungie! Yoongi is actually really worried about you. The entire car ride here he kept making Joon reassure us that you didn't die! He's just a bit shocked is all." The way he talked made it seem like it was impossible for him to be sad, but Taehyung had seen him looking just as worried as he looks happy now only a few minutes ago. "I'm Jung Hoseok, but you guys usually call me Hobi."
They all then turned to Jimin, who still looked a bit shaken up. With a bit of nervousness in his voice he spoke, "I'm Park Jimin. I've known you since we first went to the same preschool together, and we're best friends. Even before all this, I probably knew you better than you did yourself. You probably knew me better than I know myself..."
Taehyung gave Jimin a small smile, knowing that even if it didn't really fix anything, maybe it could at least help calm him down. Jimin returned a sad smile of his own.
Looking at the five boys, he wondered how such varying personalities could come together in a group that seemed to work so well, from what he's seen so far.
I must've been so lucky, Taehyung thought, to be part of something like this.
