Now or Never

"So," Ellie says after I spill the whole story out. "Who do you think did the prank?" I don't answer her. My mind is fixated on the image of that shadows wicked smile.

"Sage?" Ellie touches my arm and I jump.

"That's the thing, Ellie, I don't think that it was a prank," I say, making sure that my words sounded right as I said them.

Ellie let's out a little snort. "Sage, that really is ridiculous." She says. "Of course it was a prank. You really think that Old Billy's Mansion is infested with- what?" I give her a look that means I'm serious about this. And she sounded weird. Somethings wrong. Ellie puts her hands on her face.

"Think this through, Kennedy." She says. "There can't possibly be anything wrong with that mansion." She sounds delirious.

"Yeah, well think this through, smart one. Good old Billy didn't live to be very old before he mysteriously disappeared now did he?" I say. "He was last seen when his neighbor, Agatha, tended to his leg wound in room 120, Kat's bedroom. Age 25, and no one in the world knows where he went, or where he is." I take a breath. Ellie sits and ponders this. Pepsi comes out of her tiny kitty tower. I pick her up and curl up on the couch with her.

"Hi, Pepsi, how are you?" I ask.

"Meow," She replies. At least she said something. Ellie popped up and yelled, "That's it!" I roll my eyes from Pepsi to her.

"I'm listening," I say, taking in a breath.

"He must have run away, then disguised himself as someone else, so one has found him yet!" She exclaims. I feel my mouth drop open. I try to say something smart back at her, but my throat is to dry.

"What must have happened was you have gone insane," I say.

She blinks. "Yes, but look at yourself, Kennedy." She says, looking me up and down. "You, too."

I sigh. "Your right. We're so alike that we even share insanity."

"Angel, come on! I can't tighten your dress if you don't unlock the door," one of the crew members yells, banging on a closed door

"Angel, come on! I can't tighten your dress if you don't unlock the door," one of the crew members yells, banging on a closed door.

"What's wrong?" I ask.

"Angel won't unlock her door and I don't know why." The lady checks her watch. "But, scenes are starting in five minutes, so we better," she raises her voice and leans toward the door, "hurry it up!"  I give her a look to tell her that she can leave. I knock softly on the door.

"Angel? Can I come in?" I ask. "I want to talk to you about something." I hear soft footsteps to the door and the jingle of the doorknob. When the door opened I quickly slipped inside and closed it again. I look up at her and see tear stains on her cheeks.

"What's wrong?" I ask. She looks up.

"I do not wish to live just in order to die," She says in her strong accent that I have officially decided was Spanish. My mind stays blank of any message that she might have been trying to send me.
