A Different Side

Howls of laughter filled the break room as Audrey's so-called friends shared what they had heard about what had transpired just a couple of hours before with Michael Jackson. As expected, the nurse was tattle-tale; telling everyone at the hospital about the incident. Luckily, everyone had to sign a non-disclosure agreement with Michael's management team, so nothing leaks out to the media.

Audrey sulked on the table as they continued to tease her. "Stop," she whined.

"Aw come on, Audrey. You have to spill the beans!" my best friend, Leslie, asked. Even though she's been Audrey's best friend since elementary, she knew well not to tell her any secrets. Her mouth runs just as much as that damn nurse. You can't trust anybody nowadays. Maybe except for her other best friend, Steve.

"Chill, Les. Michael Jackson would probably say the same thing to an old hag. The guy was high as a kite." She couldn't help but cock her head to the side. She knew exactly what Steve meant, but it definitely came out wrong. Steve defended himself as soon as he saw her squint her eyes in disbelief, "I'm not saying you're ugly or anything. I-"

"Who's ugly?" A voice from the doorway interrupted. Everyone's heads turned to William who confidently strode towards them and sat on their table. "Not my Audrey, is it?" He winked, and Audrey couldn't help but blush in response. Is it not obvious that she has a huge crush on this guy?

Audrey could see Steve through her peripherals rolling his eyes, and She felt Leslie gave me a teasing nudge. "You're too sweet, Will," she gushed.

"Anyway," Steve interrupted. He was never a fan of Will. His excuse was that he gave him bad vibes. Audrey was getting the different vibes from Will. He was tall, dark and handsome. Everyone's got the hots for him. "Have you heard about Michael and his 'angel'?" Steve gave Audrey a teasing look.

Will chuckled. "Oh, that? Well," he turned to Audrey. "Is it true, Audrey?" He queried.

"He wasn't himself. I'm sure he doesn't even remember me that well." Patients tend to have no recollection of their time in recovery. These types of memories are often pruned out of the brain once the anesthesia wears off.

Will shrugged in response as if to say he didn't care. There was a tiny part of her that wanted Will to care. Maybe even feel a tinge of jealousy because someone else was paying attention to her. Will constantly gave her mixed signals. Sometimes he's hot; sometimes he's cold.

"Well tomorrow's my last day at surgery, and it just happened to be my day off," Audrey said proudly. Everyone knew she was done with surgery. Gone are the days when she'd be on her feet hours at a time and the irregular hours. "Who wants to celebrate?" she asked excitedly.

"Whoa, Paris Hilton." Leslie started. "Have you forgotten that we're Residents and our schedules are crazy?"

Audrey shrugged in response. "Well, I guess it's Netflix and a bottle of wine for me then."

3 months have passed since the Thriller was rushed to Cedars-Sinai. He was transferred that same night to another hospital that specialized in burn treatments. Audrey was enjoying her time at pediatrics. So far, she hasn't had to handle hard cases. They usually save that for senior residents who have had more experience. For now, she was content doing paperwork and occasional visits to the ward. Interacting with patients was always her forte especially kids. Sometimes they say the cutest things.

After a full day of doing administrative work, Audrey decided to take a break by visiting one of her favorite patients. Allison was only 5 and was suffering from a rare kidney disease, and she needed new ones. Unfortunately, she was on the waitlist and had to be in the hospital for daily dialysis. Despite everything, Allison exudes a positive aura around her. Always smiling, cheerful and she seems ignorant about her current condition.
