Chapter Twenty-Six - Sannleikur

Start from the beginning

I pull apart some bread and shove it into my mouth, chewing slowly, deliberately, enjoying the warmth and crunch of the crust. Bread has never tasted so good, my gods. Loki is pushing soup around his bowl with a spoon while he stares at me in a way that makes me a little hot under the collar. I narrow my eyes at him but he merely smirks at me and I swallow hard.

“I don’t know though, what do you think?”

“Sorry, what?” I ask meekly, turning to Jane who has apparently been talking to me.

Jane looks from Loki to me and then blushes, but smiles knowingly. “It’s fine, it can wait.”

“Yeah?” My breath hitches in my throat a little and I hope no one notices. “Okay.” I look to Loki who jumps up from the table, kicking his chair back. I rise slowly though every bit of me wants to leap across this table and kiss him.

“Pardon us,” Loki says, his pitch breaking ever so slightly. I stifle a giggle and then hurry after Loki, taking his hand as I meet him on the other side of the table. The halls door barely close behind us before Loki pins me up against the wall, his lips hot at my neck.

“I’m going to f—”

“Valkyrie, I’ve been looking for you,” comes a deep and familiar voice.

Loki growls but removes his face from my neck. “Ronan.”

“I didn’t even know you were still here,” I say, making no attempt to hide my annoyance. My heart is still racing and I can feel the flush in my throat, and warmth in my stomach.

“That phrase has been said about me many times before,” Ronan says with a strange smile.

“I’m sorry, it’s just…we’re a little busy…making out—I mean up! Making up for lost time, sooo…”

Loki takes this opportunity to run his cool finger slowly down the back of my neck.

Loki, behave. He audibly laughs and so I elbow him in the ribs.

“I understand,” Ronan says slowly as his eyes slide over to Loki, “however, this information pertains to him as well, so this is fortuitous timing.”

“It does?”

“Yes,” Ronan draws the word out, sounding like a growl in his low register. I notice his eyes lower to my neckline before meeting my eyes again, entirely unabashed. He has a gaze that makes you feel at once carefully considered and also entirely stripped bare. “Unless, of course, you would prefer to tell her yourself, Odinson.”

I look at Loki who has narrowed his eyes to slits. “I am not certain what you are referring to?” The tension is palpable. Loki seems surprisingly edgy but Ronan remains effortlessly cool. I’m beginning to get a little suspicious.

“You have yet to tell your wife that she has the very thing Thanos is searching for in her possession, then?”

My body jerks away from Loki’s touch and I turn fully to look at him. His jaw is clenched tight and he looks only at Ronan. “You speak of matters you know nothing of, Accuser.”

Ronan looks at me with another indecipherable gaze and then simply turns and walks past me into the main hall. I watch him go.

“Would you mind telling me exactly what that was about?” I ask lowly, not yet turning my own gaze back to Loki.

“Perhaps we should discuss this later when we’re both in a…better mood.”

Or we could discuss it now!”
