Chapter 11 바나나 한 개에 얼마예요?

Today's grammar

Don't

얼마에요?/ 원이에요?

단위명사

N만

N말고/ V-지 말고

얼마에요?/ 원이에요?

How much is this? This much won.

Once again we'll be using .이것/그것/저것 to refer to what we want to buy. There's a lot of ways to use 이것.

이것이/이게/이거 얼마예요?

그것이/그게/그지 얼마예요?

저것이/저게/저거 얼마예요?

And the answer is simply the amount is this.

10,000원이에요. (만천 원이에요.) It is 10,000 won.

5,000원이에요. (오천 원이에요.) It is 5,000 won.

This is very simple! How much is this? How much is that? It's 7,000 won. Now we'll go over numbers. The number system compared to English is very different in Korean and is a bit complicated to adjust to. An example would be the famous song lol.

"We're gonna party like it's 1999!"

But in Korean it would be

"We're going to party like it's one thousand nine hundreds nine tens and nine."

It is very different once the numbers get longer. The biggest thing to remember is that when saying 10,000 in Korean it is called 만원.

천 is 1,000 won.(The Korean equivalent of a dollar) When saying 1,000 won people don't say ,일천원 it is just 천원. Then going up adding numbers. 2 thousand won. 이천원. 삼천원.사천원. And so on. But 만원 is different.

So 20,000 wouldn't be 이십천원. It is 이만원. Which technically means 2 10,000's won.

I'll make a chart to explain.

We'll go left to right from biggest number to smallest.

12, 734, 500원

천이백칠십삼 사천오백원

There is only 1 one thousand so it isn't 일천 it is just 천 the same rule applies. Then the 2(이) after it 천=1,000 2=이 천+이=12,000. 백칠 백=100 칠=7 백+칠=700. 십삼만 so 십=10 삼=3 십+삼= 30. 30만= 30,000. 사=4 천=1,000 사+천=4,000. 오=5 백=100 오+백=500.

Put it all together! 12,000+ 700+3(10,000's/만)+4천(4,000)+500= 12, 734, 500

The biggest thing to remember is 만 (10,000) 천(1,000) 백 (100) as those are the most used amounts in Korean prices for things.

Here's some examples and practice time!

(11,000원) 만천원이에요.

바나나가 얼마예요?

800원 팔백원이에요.
