"You used me," he said, "Used me for Cora."
"Cordelia is mine," she hissed, "There is no other purpose of you in her life now that she is born to me."
"That is not for you to decide," he growled, tightening his arm on the babe as he curled her closer to him, "Nor is it your place to disrespect our pack this way! She is a daughter of mine, of light, and you will do well to leave before I tear you to shreds, demon."
"You should know not to cross me, Arham. Alpha or not, my people will come for her."
"Not while I live. So long as this pack stands, and you remain on your side of the shadows as required by law, she'll remain in my protection and you will be unable to touch her."
The woman's lips pulled in a sneer, a pair of pointed fangs revealed just past the curling smile, "Perhaps, but I am patient. Unlike you, I'm everlasting-- she will be everlasting. There will be a point in time when the children of the moon will be unable to protect her from what she is. You will perish as all mortals do, but I will be waiting for when she needs her mother again." The smoke of shadows crept forward, sweeping away the image of the woman as she got her last word across.
He looked down towards the child, his fingers curling slightly to hold her a little closer. There was truth in the woman's words, a terrifying truth that he could only protect her from for as long as he lives-- but he did not intend to die any time soon, and until Cordelia Price could protect herself, it was up to him to teach his daughter everything about the ways of the shadows.
