I was preparing the couch for Klaus while he changed in the bathroom. My father had given him clothes to sleep in. The moment I finished he came out of the bathroom.

I had to smile when I saw him, my father's pajamas were a little too small for him. He blushed as I looked at him. "It's a little too small." He confirmed my thoughts and smiled embarrased. "I've made the couch Ready for you, I hope that's comfortable, I am so sorry that we can not offer you a more comfortable place to sleep." "It's okay, I'm sorry that I made you such circumstances." "No, you don't need to be sorry. You don't bother us." I assured and smiled. "I'm going to sleep now, do you need anything else?"

"No, no thanks, good night." Klaus said and sat down on the couch. "Well then, have a good night too, if you are hungry or thirsty, you can take whatever you want from the fridge, please help yourself." I said before I left.

"Thank you." I heard Klaus say before I made my way to my room.

Bed done, I lay down under my blanket. For some reason I could't fall asleep. I just looked up at the ceiling in my room.

Determined, I grabbed my book on the bedside table and read the lines I had read so many times before. Mr. Darcy spoke to Elizabeth Bennet. I was so engrossed in my favorite book that I did not even realize what time it was. A glance at my father's old pocket watch told me that I had already read over an hour. My throat was dry and I felt a little hungry. So I got up and ran to the kitchen.

I paused outside the kitchen door. A small light burned in the room.

Slowly and without a sound, I opened the kitchen door and sneaked inside. Just when I thought there would be no one inside, the fridge closed. I had not noticed that it was open.

Klaus stood there, startled when he saw me. He had a glass of water in his hand. "I'm sorry, I was just thirsty. Did I wake you?" he asked.

"No, I could't sleep, my stomach growls with hunger, would you like to eat something?" "To be honest .." he laughed "I'm hungry already."

"Well, how about a sandwich?" I asked and he nodded. While I was making the sandwiches, Klaus was watching me all the time. I already felt uncomfortable.

"Can you stop staring at me like that?"

"I can not help it, your night dress looks adorable." the boy grinned and his eyes began to shine. My cheeks turned pink and my knees got weak. I had completely forgotten that I wore my short nightie in a creamy color. It was made of a silk fabric. My mother had made it for me. Usually we do not have any money to buy something like that. That's why she had used the fabric from a customer, because she no longer needed it. If only would be wearing something over it, but because of hunger I totally forgot that.

"You are cute when you blush." I heard his gentle voice say. "Your attempts to flirt are lame." I tried to distract myself. He should't realize that he intimidates me.

His laughter echoed in the kitchen. Oh no my parents could wake up. What would they think if they both see us in the kitchen? "Be quiet." I whispered. "You'll wake everyone else."

Klaus put his index finger to his lips and chuckled softly.

"My attempts to flirt?" He asked. "Who says I tried to flirt with you?"

"Oh, shut up." I was ashamed now.

"I didn't try that, I did." He explained, looking me in the eye. For a brief moment, I lost myself in them.

"Will you give me one of those delicious sandwiches now?" he asked with a sassy grin. I had already made the sandwiches and kept them with the plate in my hand the whole time. He noticed that I stared at him. How embarrassing. I put his on the table in front of him and sat down. We ate for a short while. It was an unpleasant silence that I had to break. But I didn't know what topic to start with.

Then suddenly it occurred to me. The car accident. The day I saw him for the first time. The day he seemed so unappealing to me. I wanted to know why he was so angry.

"Klaus?" "Hm?" There was a short answer as he still had a big bite of the sandwich in his mouth. I couldn't help but laugh, he looked so cute. "Look, remember the day you had the car accident, where you snapped at me like that?" He looked at me in amusement. "Yes, why?" He asked. "Well, when we got in the car, you gestured so furiously, and girls can drive a car, what's the saying?" I asked.

"Well my friend said I shouldn't have made you angry, because maybe you could be the girl I was looking for, what a coincidence that you were." he laughed. "I got angry because the others started laughing, they always had to tease me because I was looking for the Forbes family."

Now I knew what he meant. "Well I can drive anyway." I say and again he had to laugh.

We lingered in our chairs for a few minutes until Klaus got up and said it would be better if we went to sleep. I nodded and wished him a remaining goodnight before putting the plates in our sink.

"Oh yes and Caroline, ..." Klaus whispered from the kitchen door. I turned and looked at him, signalizing that he can continue.

"The sandwich was delicious." he complimented me and disappeared into the living room without waiting for my answer.
