Jennie places one foot in front of the other. Within minutes she was able to see the beginning of Seoul. The large buildings small in the distance, but filling the entire horizon. An half hour later walking in silence as the cars zoomed by her, she had finally made it into the heart of the city. Vehicles honking, people rushing to and from their office buildings, people in and out of stores and restaurants. Jennie paused and had almost forgotten what it was like, seeing the people gave her memories of a dark past not so long ago, but definitely one she wanted to forget. She began to pace again, realizing she had stopped walking after her thoughts flooded her. An actual meal would be nice, she thought to herself as her stomach made a painful growl. Jennie approached the first diner she was able to spot. She looked up and saw the word jangmi(rose) placed on the building in big red Hanja characters. With a beautiful rose interlocking itself with the lettering. Jennie pushed the glass door open, it making a loud bell ring as she did so.
"Welcome to Rose. Have a seat and we'll send someone to take your order soon." A brunette girl stated with a soft smile. Jennie acknowledged her with a nod as she made her way to the empty corner seat. She felt the relief on her legs and feet as she sat down on the blue leathery cushion. She looked out of the window, taking her black leather bag off and setting it next to her. She watched as the people walked by, she didn't think anything when she saw the man on the phone, or the woman rushing to her job. But that couple, holding hands as they ambled by the buildings. She looked at their smile, how happy they looked. Their happiness made her shudder, she didn't really understand why. Auntie Gi had given her a new life, why the memories never left her she still didn't understand.
"Hello." Jennie turned as she was snapped out of her thoughts. A gorgeous plantium blonde waitress stood next to her. She wore a light red female waitress outfit. Her hair tied in a ponytail. She had pink lips with slanted eyes, and a rounded jaw. She wore a small amount of pink makeup, but that did little to supress her beauty.
"My name is Rosè. Here's our menu. I'll give you a few minutes to decide what you want, and I'll be right back with you." She laid a laminated menu with breakfast and lunch options on the front and dinner options on the back.
"Thank you." Jennie smiled. The blonde waitress walked away. Jennie looked at the menu, only eyeing the breakfast part of it.
"Breakfast egg and tofu. Vegetable omelet. Breakfast egg toast sandwich. Breakfast with fruit bread and eggs." She whispered the options to herself. The more she read on the more she was overwhelmed with the many options. She decided to keep it simple and choose the breakfast egg toast sandwhich. Moments later Rosè returned.
"Have you decided on your order?"
"Yes, the breakfast egg toast sandwich sounds rather pleasing. And a small glass of milk."
"Alright, I will have your order right away." Rosè grabbed the menu and walked off. Jennie was alone once again. She looked around the small warm cozy diner. It wasn't full, a few people scattered around the place. The quiet ambience of the diner was a little comforting. The forks hitting the plates, and the low hum of the people's conversation. Moment's later Rosè had returned and laid a tray in front of Jennie, displaying her food perfectly.
"Wow. This looks amazing." Jennie said with wide eyes.
"What's so amazing about it?" Rosè giggled.
"Oh. Well, it's just been some time since I've had an actual meal like this." Jennie explained. Rosè's face turned into a frown, realizing she giggled about a woman excited about her meal.
"I'm so sorry." Rosè apologized. "I had no idea..."
"It's fine." Jennie interrupted. "It was an whole ordeal. It's over now though." She looked at her meal and began to prepare herself to eat, reaching for napkins. Rosè tried to find a way to change the topic before walking away.
"Your tattoos are beautiful. Traditional Korean. I have a few of my own, nothing like that. I might, even though I grew up in Auckland." She nodded.
"Auckland? Where is that?" Jennie questioned has she took her first savoring bite.
"That's in New Zealand." Rosè smiled. Jennie looked up as she chewed a mouthful of sandwich. She then covered her mouth with a napkin. "Your Korean is perfect. How did you learn it?" She sat down in front Jennie.
"I moved over here with my mother, I wanted to become a singer. I realized all the companies and singer classes here either don't understand or allow english. So I bought as many programs as I could and just studied for months at a time. Now the language is second nature to me. But since my mom owns this diner, I help her out and it's hard to focus on my own thing. My girlfriend brings in a decent amount of money but, I don't wanna just up and leave my mother." Jennie swallowed and realized she didn't know where her life was going as of yet. What she was gonna be doing with it. "Live." Is what auntie Gi told her.
"That's impressive." Jennie replied. "If I'm being honest with you, I don't know where my life is going neither. Also is that why your name is Rosè? Or was that a coincidence?" Jennie giggled as she took another bite. Rosè smiled. Other than her mom and girlfriend, she never had a conversation where someone was actually listening.
"No. My real name is Park Chaeyoung, but when I was born my mother always called me her little rose. Then when we moved to south Korea and my mother got a job at this diner called "Rose", she said it was only fitting. Somehow Rose turned into Ro-zay; I guess it just stuck ever since. I like it, it's comforting. Rosè reminds me of my mother. And this diner she's worked at for so long to keep food on the table." Jennie looked down and smiled. She wished her mother was still alive. She wished things would've gone different that night. Her smile faded and she took two gulps of the cold fresh milk.
"Have you told your mother what you wanna do with your life?" Jennie asked, wiping her mouth with a napkin. Rosè frowned.
"No. It's hard to. I love her and I fear if I tell her what I want to do she'll think I'm abandoning her. But if my singing career worked out, she'd never have to worry about working again. And that's what she deserves."
"You should tell her what you want. Mothers are forgiving. And they'll always love their little girls, which means they'll support you no matter what. Just a thought." Jennie smiled and bit down on the crunchy toast bread. Rosè smiled.
"Gamsahabnida(thank you). I'll keep that in mind...?" She ended the sentence in a question and nodded, asking for Jennie's name.
"Jennie. Jennie Kim." She answered as she covered her mouth with a napkin.
"Ah. My girlfriends name is Kim. We don't ever really use it though. Everyone uses her last name, Jisoo.  Do you have somewhere to stay Jennie?" Rosè asked politely. Jennie nodded no with her mouth full.
"You can stay with me and my girlfriend. I live right next to my mother, she lives with my step father. If you'd be more comfortable with that." Rosè suggested.
"No. Living with you would be just fine. An actual warm bed would be wonderful."
"If you don't mind me asking...are you homeless? Are you just arriving here? What's your story?" Rosè questioned lightly. Not wanting to offend Jennie.
"It's a short but painful one. I'll tell you about it sometime. But to sort of answer your question, I was born in south Korea, I was just gone for a little. I'm here now though." Jennie nodded. Rosè stood and bowed lightly.
"Well, welcome back to Seoul, the capital of South Korea."
