Ok so before we move on, I'm gonna say the program I used for this drawing-

I use an iPad to draw and I use the app Ibis Paint, it's free and has a lot of features! Another app I can recommend for the ipad is Medibang Paint, which is also free!

If you use a computer, and don't have any money, I suggest FireAlpaca and/or Medibang Paint (I've experimented with both and they both work wonders)

The character that I drew is Manon Blackbeak from the series, Throne of Glass, which I suggest you go read because it's really good uwu

Slight disclaimer, some of the stuff I used for effects may not be on the programs you use, and/or are just renamed something else. So; fair warning XD

When I start a drawing, I usually go and find a reference first to get the proportions right

When I start a drawing, I usually go and find a reference first to get the proportions right. I make it simple and easy to follow, and for each limb of the body I draw a circle to work around. It's okay if the pose is a bit stiff at first, it'll get fixed later uwu

Then what I do next, is I make a new layer above the original sketch and add more of the details like facial features, hair, clothing, etc

Then what I do next, is I make a new layer above the original sketch and add more of the details like facial features, hair, clothing, etc. The clothes are subject to change and turn out a lot different in the end result based off of looking at more references of the character as well as just having the clothing make more sense.

Next I do a second sketch above the first one to refine and clean up the lines to make them easier to see when it came to lineart. I also blocked out certain colors that stood out in the character to make the sketch less boring. I do that more to keep myself inspired rather than use it practically XD

Next I do the line work. The pen size I use is 1.8 or lower, but that's subject to change based off of canvas size. I'd suggest when starting out to just experiment with pen sizes to see what fits your style better (thinner or thicker lineart). I try to keep my lines as clean as possible when drawing but that's more of a style choice uwu

Next I go in and color the lineart! To color easily, I'd suggest using the select tool and selecting everything outside the character your trying to draw, invert that, and then block out the colors

Next I go in and color the lineart! To color easily, I'd suggest using the select tool and selecting everything outside the character your trying to draw, invert that, and then block out the colors. After that you can just add another layer and clip it or use the alpha lock, that way the colors won't go outside the lines. You don't have to do that but it definitely saves a bunch of time and makes things much easier.

Next I do the shading! I try and get a contrasting color to the colors used in the picture to shade

Next I do the shading! I try and get a contrasting color to the colors used in the picture to shade. My one rule is to never shade in black (unless black is the contrasting color). Using black as a shade can make the picture more plain and flat. The effects used for the shading is multiply, and the effects used for lighting is add. I did more simpler shading in this picture to save time and it worked in my favor (Using the airbrush tool and then doing smaller details)

Then to finish it up I do a block background and add white around the character to make it pop! And that is my drawing process XD

I hope this was semi helpful to some of you. A big tip is just to look at references (Pinterest is a good place to find some) and practice. Just draw when you can, and start out drawing for yourself, it sparks a lot more inspiration than it is lead to believe.

But what am I saying, im not your mom, just have fun with it and keep practicing; everyone improves even if it seems like you're not!
