If you play with fire,
you're gonna get burned.
Today was the New York pride, a very joyous and colourful day. The streets were filled with people who were dancing and cheering. A dark haired girl found herself looking at the scene in front of her whilst sitting on a bench. A man in a pink suit ran by screaming: "LOVE IS LOVE!" repeatedly. She smiled proudly and thought of the thousands of carefree people on this glorious day.
The dark haired girl was woken from her daydream, when another girl joined her on the bench.
She glimpsed at her quickly trying to deduce how the girl looked. She saw a flash of tan skin and long brown locks.
The girl had an internal argument with herself, whether she should introduce herself or not. It went a bit like this:
'Maybe I should go talk to her...'
'No no no, come on this will only end in you embarrassing yourself'
'But she came and sat down next to me'
'That's just, because there is no where els to sit'
'But it is pride, there is like an 80% chance she's gay or maybe bi'
'Are you sure you want to go through more lesbian drama?'
This went on for a while going back and forth, until the decision was made for her when the girl next to her turned towards her and started: "Sorry can I ask y.."
The moment their eyes met probably lasted less then a second, but it felt like so much more. Her green eyes stared into de brown ones of the latina looking girl, who had stopped talking, being distracted as well
"Uhm.. Can I maybe borrow your phone?" The other girl managed to ask while scratching her head.
She looked so adorable doing that.
"Sure, of course here you go." The green eyed girl said handing her her phone, still baffled of what had just happened.
"Thank you!" The latina said while standing up and dialing a number.
She couldn't hear much of the conversation, so she just observed the othergirl. She was petite, but had a strong voice and full lips. She was wearing a white dress that matched her skin.
The girlwalked back to her and stated: "My friends just totally bailed on me."
"Oh that sucks man," she said standing up, "I'm Lauren by the way."
"My name's Camila." She said while handing the phone back to Lauren. Lauren grinned and asked: "So what brings you to the pride Camila?"
"What do you think I'm doing here?" Camila raised an eyebrow smirking slightly.
Lauren mentally highfived herself.
"The same as me I hope." She responded taking a step closer.
Camila blushed and sat down again crossing her legs, Lauren did the same only she sat with her legs spread.
"So, since your friends are assholes, do you maybe want to spend your afternoon here with me?" Lauren asked looking directly into Camila's eyes. Camila looked back at her switching her focus from eye to eye, as if she was trying to understand something. "Yes why not, that would be lovely," she responded coming to terms. "and my friend aren't really assholes, they just aren't gay enough for today." Lauren laughed: "Well I'm too gay for all the other days of the year, so they should be able to manage." Lauren joked back and in return Camila let out a giggle.
The girls went on like this for awhile and then kept talking on that bench and watching the festive people come by, until the parade was calming down and dawn began to come. They had both enjoyed each others company. "Can I take you out?" Lauren finally asked. You could see that she was slightly nervous. Camila gave her a big smile "I would love that Lauren."
They didn't wait, they went out that same night. All the time they spend being together was like a dream to both of them. They arrived at a restaurant Lauren had picked. "After you." Lauren said making a slight bow and pointing towards the entrance. "Oh you are a gentlewoman." Camila said in a jokingly posh voice. They entered and got a table by the window. They ordered and Lauren asked for a bottle of expensive wine.
Camila was looking around and immediately loved Lauren's style when it came to restaurants. It was cozy but at the same time romantic, nicely warm inside and the mood just wanted you to stay there all night.
While eating and finishing the entire bottle of wine they talked and talked and talked. It was like they had known each other for years. It wasn't just chatting, there were discussions about feminism, sexism, politics and their favorite celebrity. It was obvious that both of the girls were intelligent and they fit together in a very comfortable way.
At the end of the night Lauren walked Camila home, as they were too intoxicated to drive. Their cheeks were red from the amount of wine they had drunk. The skirt of Camila's dress floated with the wind as they walked through the busy city. Lauren thought of holding Camila's hand, but she pushed that thought away thinking it would be too soon.
Camila gave Lauren a warm smile when they were standing in front of Camila's apartment. "Thank you Lauren, I honestly haven't had this much fun in weeks." Lauren looked very pleased with herself. "No problem, I've really enjoyed myself too." And they both really meant that, it doesn't happen a lot that people can connect so soon and so strongly.
Camila unlocked her door, but before she went inside she turned around. "I'd love to do this again." She said and kissed Lauren on her cheek. Lauren was too surprised to reply, her mouth fell open slightly. She looked in Camila's brown eyes and saw, she was made of fire. Her eyes had this amazing sparkle in them, as if her soul was on fire and for a moment she stood there in aw. Camila chuckled and waved Lauren goodbye.
"Goodnight Lauren." Camila said looking back from her doorpost. "Goodnight Camila." Lauren replied and she heard the sound of the door shutting. Camila rested herself against the door and let out a content sigh, she kicked her shoes off and made herself some tea. She had to write in her diary about this. She felt like it wouldn't be the last time she would write about the beautiful girl.
And when both girls rested their heads on their pillow at the end of the night, they couldn't help but smile. Both thinking about the amazing girl they just met. Closing their eyes, dreaming about what is yet to come.
