Shadows

Chapter 2

Spottedtail set the kits a little ways from camp. Then he went through the tunnel and back into camp, everyone was still asleep. It was almost dawn and shortly after the Clan leader woke up.

"Anything interesting?" he asked. Spottedtail replied, "'No, if there was I'd tell you." "Good" Deadstar said.

Deadstar ran a tight clan, if you did anything out of line you were like a mice being stalked by the greatest hunter. A lesson kits alike must learn quickly if they wish to become apprentices. Spottedtail went into the warriors den and quickly fell asleep.

"Wake up! Somethings happening" Stoneriver shook him causing Spottedtail to spring out of his nest.

He walked out of the den and he saw the two kits in the middle of the clan. Im such a mouse-brain! he thought. He quietly joined the group of cats.

The two kits were sitting next together looking extremely nervous. "I have decided to take these two mysterious kits in for the benefits of our clan." Deadstar announced. "Wait, what if their mother comes back to get them?" Stoneriver asked. "Mouse-brain if their mother really loved them would she leave them out in the middle of leaf-bear?" Deadstar replied. Everyone was dead silent, a huge amount of guilt swept over Spottedtail.

Everyone in the clan knew how much Deadstar hated his own mother. Since his father died when he was born, Deadstar's mother was stupid enough to name her kit Deadkit. Then his mother was ruthless and cruel for the rest of her life. She had mysteriously died shortly after Deadstar became deputy.

"Midnightshine, will you look after the white kit, and Rosesplash, will you look after the grey kit? Both queens nodded in agreement. Midnightshine's kits were barely a few days old while Rosesplash's were about to become apprentices. Would they make the grey kit an apprentice with Rosesplash's two kits? Spottedtail wondered. "Also, keep this in mind, I'm sure that you all could keep a secret, so we are going to pretend that these two kits have been with us since they were born." Deadstar told the clan.

No, that is where I draw the line. He looked around, Mossfur, the medicine cat was speachless. Midnightshine and Rosesplash didn't look too thrilled about the idea. Once everything settled down Deadstar asked, "Midnightshine, Rosesplash, would you like to name the kits?" "I'll name the white one Icekit." Midnightshine replied. "I will name the grey one Hopekit." Rosesplash told him. "Great, now go back to your duties." Deadstar told everyone.

By now the two kits were asleep. Great, they probably wont know anything. Spottedtail thought to himself. Midnightshine and Rosesplash went to pick up the kits and walked into the nursery.
