*I feel this is needed to kind of needed to understand the story*

SKIP IF YOU HATE SCIENCE YOU DON'T REALLY NEED THIS TO UNDERSTAND THE ENTIRE STORY

Radiation affects your body cells and changes it. In some cases it causes cancer. As radiation causes there to be "cancerous cells" which are rapidly undergoing cell division.

Gamma Rays also known as electromagnetic radiation is a form of X-Ray. Gamma Rays usually have a shorter wavelength. They are also invisible.

If some is exposed to extreme radiation, this may cause Acute Radiation Syndrome. This may cause death caused by cellular degradation, as radiation basically messes up your DNA.

🥰I'm so sorry I have to bring in Science 🥶 but it's needed to understand the first part of the story.

At the start of the story, Mal Slecht Inc. (basically set up to experiment on nuclear weapons and other radioactive weapons) uses its new technology on a small state in Ohio.

They call their weapon ERE (extreme radiation exposure) ~ so yes this caused almost the whole population to die.

So Rachel (the protagonist) was extremely close to where the weapon was used. Her parents were killed but due to her being a new-born her cells were continuously dividing and somehow radiation latched onto those cells. So she's basically radioactive.

Darceline (the other protagonist) was further away when the weapon was tested. She was also a new-born so she was not affected by the blast and only a small amount of radiation was in her cells. So she was powerless.

Darceline was the first to be captured by Mal Slecht Inc. who wanted to see how it was possible that only the children survived the ERE while the rest of the population ceased to exist.

But they found Darceline to be powerless, so they tracked down the other new born which was Rachel and started carrying out tests on her.
