Japanese Language Lessons - To Do (Verb) - Japanese Lesson 6 (p.1 of 1)
Today, we are going to learn the verb shimasu (to do something)
Let me give you some examples.
Benkyou o shimasu - to study
Shigoto o shimasu - to work
Kaigi o shimasu - to have a meeting
Kaimono o shimasu - to shop
Jogingu o shimasu - to jog
Tenisu o shimasu - to play tennis
Paati o shimasu - to party
Do you still remember the time expressions?
Day before yesterday - ototoi
Yesterday - kinoo
Today - kyou
Tomorrow - ashita
Day after tomorrow - asatte
Let us make sentences.
I will play tennis today.
Kyou tenisu o shimasu.
We will have a meeting the day after tomorrow.
Asatte kaigi o shimasu.
I shopped yesterday.
Kinoo kaimono o shimashita.
Remember the verb conjugation?
For negative, change masu to masen.
For past, change masu to mashita.
For past negative, change masu to masen deshita.
Now, let us add some places.
Uchi - house
Kaisha - Company/Office building
Kouen - park
Gakko - school
Depaato - Department Store
Let's try making sentences.
I worked in the office yesterday.
Kinoo kaisha de shigoto o shimashita.
We use the particle de to indicate where the action takes place. It translates into in, at, on.
RULE:
You might get confused because the particle ni can also be used as in, at, and on. Here's the rule:
*Use ni if the verbs are ikimasu (to go) and kaerimasu (to go back/return/to come back)
*Use de if the verb is neither ikimasu nor kaerimasu.
On the sentence I worked in the office yesterday, the verb is work so the particle used was de.
I will study in the house.
Uchi de benkyou o shimasu.
I did not shop at department store yesterday.
Kinoo depaato de kaimono o shimasen deshita.
The next one is to add with whom to the sentence.
To - with
I will play tennis with April at the park tomorrow.
Asatte kouen de Eipuru-san to tenisu o shimasu.
We add san after other person's name to show respect.
I studied in the house with my friends yesterday.
Kinoo uchi de tomadachi to benkyou o shimashita.
Tomodachi - friend/s
I did not jog with Mike at the park the day before yesterday.
Ototoi kouen de Maiku-san to jogingu o shimasen deshita.
That's all. You can now create many sentences on your own. :) I hope this lesson helps you like it does to me.
