The faint scent of coffee and cigarette smoke lingers in the atmosphere of the dim, silent room. The space seems as if it has been completely robbed of all possible forms of light, preventing my eyes from picking up on the outlines of objects surrounding the room. Fear courses irrationally through my veins as my stomach churns persistently, though I am unaware as to why I suddenly feel so anxious.
"Has is always been in your nature to be frightened of things you're unable to comprehend?"
A low voice sounds, slicing through the silence so abruptly that it makes me flinch and bump my head on what I assume to be a wall behind me. I inhale shakily, placing a trembling hand on my chest to ensure my heart didn't jump out of my chest.
"I bet that felt nice." The husky voice sounds again, a hint of amusement laced in his words this time.
"Oh, splendid. You should try it sometime." I manage to grumble out sarcastically, despite my fear. I rub the back of my head, hoping a bump wouldn't form later on.
I gasp as warm breath tickles my neck and causes the hair to rise on my arms. I tilt my head back as far as I possibly can in order to retreat further away from the male that I could sense kneeling directly in front of me.
"Your heart is beating rapidly like a drum; on a scale of one to ten, how much do I intimidate you?" I turn my face away from him, simply wishing to see his features so I can know who to avoid in the future. I thrust the palms of my hands outwards in hopes of either pushing him away or hitting something that would tell me more about the type of person I'm dealing with. Is he a murderer? Is he just some weird stalker that cornered me in a room? I can't remember anything concerning what happened before this, so is it possible that he drugged me somehow?
To my dismay and bewilderment, I don't actually manage to hit anything when I throw my arms out. A soft chuckle echoes off the walls of the room and feels as though it enters one ear, bounces around inside my head for a moment, then proceeds to fly out the other ear and reenter the atmosphere.
"Feeling a bit daring tonight, are we? How cute."
"Who are you? Leave me alone!"
I force myself to my feet, feeling my forehead scrunch up with a mix of frustration and determination. There's something about his mocking tone that makes me want to punch him in the face repeatedly until he's unconscious.
"You never answered my question, peach." I could feel my face heating up with anger at the sound of this name. Since when did people who lock you in a dark room and invade your personal space get to give you nicknames?
"Maybe you should have made a better first impression if you wanted to have an intelligent conversation."
I place my dominant hand on one of the walls and use it as a guide as I begin to venture around the room to see if there are any actual objects sitting along the outer rim of the space.
"Awe is somebody upset because they're missing nappy time?" I prevent myself from admitting to him that I am rather exhausted and want nothing more than to curl up on the floor with a blanket and take a nap.
I stay silent, hoping to make my way around the room without him detecting where I am. I walk on my tiptoes, hoping that the floor boards won't creak beneath my weight and give me away.
"Ooo cat and mouse is one of my favorite games. Do you know why?" He snickers at my lack of response before continuing, "Because the cat always catches the mouse, of course." His teasing whisper sounds from all around me, making my breath catch at the back of my throat and my body freeze instinctively out of utter fear.
