Prompt: Garrett when his relationship with Roan was still good

-----------------------------------

"Is that a new shirt?" Roan asked as I got in his car.

"It is! I found it at the mall with my parents," I said, looking down at it. "You like it?"

"Yea," he said, leaning over to kiss my cheek. "It looks good on you."

"I hope it still fits me when we're done eating," I said.

Roan rolled his eyes and backed out of my driveway. I reached for his phone and he swatted my hand away.

"I already it have it on the playlist we made the other day," he said.

I brightened. "Oh, the one with plenty of Kesha on it."

"Do you know how much I love you for letting you put Kesha on my phone?" he said.

"A whole lot?" I said, beaming a smile at him.

                "More than that," he said.

I laughed and leaned back in the seat. "Can I roll the window down?"

"Fine, but if it starts making that weird noise, you're putting it back up," he said.

I rolled the window down, letting the wind wash over me and blow my hair around. Roan had called me up for a surprise dinner date tonight, and I was excited because it was later than we usually ate. The stars would be out by the time we were done.

Roan pulled into the parking lot of the sandwich place we both liked. We got out and went inside, being seated and grabbing our menus.

"I'll pay. Get whatever you want," he said, holding my hand under the table. "Do you want to come over after? They were having a sale on those stupid horror movies you like, so I grabbed a few."

"I love stupid horror movies," I said, grinning. "Hell yea, let's get spooky."

"Dork," he said, but there was a small smile on his face.

We ordered our food and talked casually as we waited. I updated Roan on my dad's newest gardening project and Michigan's determination to eat the whole garden, and Roan updated me on the kayaking trip his dad had planned for their family.

"You're invited, by the way," he said. "Dad wanted it to be a family thing but I know you love kayaking. Mom is hoping you'll come."

"Sure, I'd love to," I said eagerly. I did love kayaking. I loved the peaceful feel of gliding across the water, taking in the view and feeling the water splash against me.

"Good, I'll let my parents know," Roan said, leaning back as a waiter brought our food to us. "What did you get to drink? It looks good."

"Hibiscus tea," I said, pushing it towards him. "Try some."

He took a swallow and nodded. "That is good. Want to try mine? It's...shit, I forgot. Did I get the passion fruit one?"

"Yea, that's what you ordered," I said, taking a sip of that. "Oh, tasty. I like that."

"I'll share my drink but not my food," he warned.

"Hey, same," I said, picking up my sandwich. "I love you, but food will always have the top spot in my heart."

"As long as we agree on that," he said with a little laugh.

The two of us ate our meals, Roan even breaking off a piece of his sandwich to let me try. I let him take a bite of mine as a thanks.

When we were done, Roan paid and we left the sandwich place. I caught Roan's hand as he started heading for the car.

"What, Gar?" he asked curiously, looking over his shoulder at me.

I pointed up at the sky. "It looks pretty tonight."

"It looks the same as it does every night," Roan said, tugging his hand away from mine. He pulled me close and wrapped an arm around my waist, letting me watch the sky.

"It actually changes," I said, curling against his body and resting my head on his shoulder as I looked up at the stars.

"Yea?" he said, kissing my head. "Come on. We're just standing in the parking lot."

I felt a frown come to my face as I let him lead me away. But when we reached the car, he just sat on the hood and tugged me down next to him, lying back against the windshield. I laid down next to him, cuddling against his side as he put his arm back around me.

                "It's a beautiful night out," I said.

"Mhm," he agreed, kissing me. "You do look great in that shirt, Garrett. Brings out your eyes."

"Does it?" I smiled a little, looking into his eyes. "Let me give you a better view."

"I've got enough to imagine it," he said, closing his eyes and pulling me close to kiss me again.

I knew Roan didn't care for the stars, but I was grateful he was letting us lay on his car to watch them. I was grateful for the surprise date and the kisses. For Roan.

"We can stop at the store on the way back and pick up some new teas to try while we watch those movies," he offered, kissing my neck.

"I'm always down for that," I said, lightly nudging him away from my neck. "I'm trying to be down for things, Roan, not up."

"I like you either way," he said, but stopped kissing at my neck. He smiled at me, a wide, genuine smile. "I'm glad we got dinner tonight. Breakfast next week?"

"And lunch the week after that," I said, reaching for his hand and squeezing it.

"Don't get too crazy. I'm not that rich," he teased.

I put my head back on his shoulder, kissing his cheek as I went. He pulled me closer and we laid there, me watching the stars and Roan watching me. What a fantastic night with a fantastic boyfriend.
