"And then they lived happily ever after. The end." mommy whispered, closing the book shut.
Mommy bent down and kissed me on the forehead. Before she could walk away, I hopped up and hugged her tightly.
"Oh! You're still awake!" She gasped with mock surprise, I knew she wasn't scared because we did this everyday.
It was a typical Wednesday night. Mommy just finished giving me a bubble bath followed by letting me wear my favorite polka dot pajamas. She was reading The three little pigs as I fell asleep more with each page. Just when she is about to leave I hug her and say-
"Can we please read another story"?
She then of course replies with-
"Aiden now you know that-
BOOM!
Something was different.
Dad slammed the front door with so much force, even my room shook from the impact.
"GET OVER HERE ALYSSA! " He yelled to mom.
I wrap my favorite blue blanket around my head to mask the shivers of fear for shivers of being cold. Though it is clear that mommy is frightened too, she kisses my forehead and leaves silently. Counting to ten in my mind I hop out of my dinosaur twin bed. Grabbing Blue, the stuffed bear, I tip toe to my door.
"Okay Aiden, you can do this. Open the door quietly." I murmur to myself.
Squeeeeaaaak.
I open the door just enough to peep through it. With my right eye closed, I put my left eye to the peep hole I made.
"I CANT STAND THOSE SONS OF BITCHES AT WORK!" My dad roars, slamming his suitcase on to the table in the dining room.
"I understand you're angry but if you could just keep it down-
"I HATE THIS PATHETIC TOWN AND ALL THE RETARDS IN IT. BUT YOU JUST DON'T WANT TO LEAVE!" He pointed an aggressively accusing finger at my mom.
"I wouldn't mind leav-
"SHUT UP ALYSSA, WHY DON'T YOU MAKE YOURSELF USEFUL AND MAKE ME DINNER! "
"Baby, are you drunk?" Asks mommy.
He remains quiet.
"George what did I tell you about getting drunk! It's a bad look and we have a son", Mommy mutters "we have a son" so quietly even I could barely hear it.
"Fuck Aiden". My dad says while rolling his eyes.
"Excuse me, but don't you DARE talk about our lovely son in that way!" She walked up to him so that they were less than a foot apart.
"Make me dinner!"
"Apologize!"
"Make. Me. Dinner! Right now!"
"Make. Your. Own. Dinner. George."
She tries to turn around but dad grabs her by the neck and yanks her down. He picks up his suitcase and hits mommy with the suitcase a lot of times.
"YOU DON'T TELL ME WHAT TO DO!"
"Let me go George", mommy growls
"NO BITCH CAN EVER TELL ME WHAT TO DO!" Dad roars.
"George..."
"YOU STAY IN YOUR GODDAMN PLACE WOMAN!"
I freeze while all of this happens. Why is daddy hurting mommy again?
I hear mommy scream, "HELP" and I snap out of my frozen state.
I run down the hallway with all of my might, still clutching on to Blue for support. Daddy sees me and stops hurting mommy just long enough for her to gain control of the situation. Still, I throw Blue at dad and squeal, "Stop dad!"
Mommy rips the suitcase out of dad's hand and whacks him hard enough for him to lose consciousness for a few moments.
Mommy stands up and hisses. really bad. She has bruises on her neck and cuts and scrapes from head to toe. Her eyes are low with disappointment and her lips are all shaky.
"Follow me Aiden!" I run to grab Blue and then follow her.
We run out the back door. The air is crisp and cool as I follow mommy's now dark figure. The grass is a little wet from it raining a tad bit earlier in the afternoon. It smells outdoorsy, a smell I love. Mommy finally stops running and sits down. I do as she does and snuggle up close to her.
"Mommy are you okay?" I ask without giving her time to breathe.
"Yes sweetheart, I'm okay. Me and daddy just got in a disagreement." She pants.
I shake my head, "But, Miss. Clarice always tells us that hitting is never the answer. She says that we should just talk things out."
Mommy's trembling lip shakes even more. Before I know it, she's crying. Seeing mommy cry is not easy to look at. Little boys aren't supposed to see their mommies cry.
"Mommy?"
"Aiden, I'm okay but what your dad did is not okay. When you fall in love one day, never do what your dad did." She cries out.
"Ew, love is gross."
She giggles at my response.
"Mommy, can we go away?"
"No baby I'm sure that your daddy is sleeping now and-
"But I don't want to live with dad anymore!" I admit to her.
"Shhhh" she hisses
"ALYSSA! GET YOUR ASS BACK HERE! IF YOU CALL THE POLICE I SWEAR IT'S OVER FOR YOU!"
I stand up and start trying to pull her up so we can run.
"Aiden stop!" She whisper-shouted.
"Come on!" I yell impatiently. I pull even harder.
"Aiden!" She whisper-shouts again.
"There you are!" Dad smirked.
Dad looked really, really, really bad.
He has scratches on his arms from my mom trying to get away. Even more noticeable is the giant reddish purple bruise and dent in his face from the suitcase. Dad looks very angry and has an object in his hand that looks like the small, silver version of my favorite water squirter.
"Put the gun down now!" Mommy demanded.
He answered by pushing some button that made a loud POW sound. No one is hurt.
Mommy grabs my hand and runs across the street, but it's a very busy street. I skid to a stop.
"MOMMY WAIT!"
She doesn't listen.
She doesn't hear me.
The truck doesn't see her.
There's a lot of blood.
She's dead.
And it's all dad's fault.
