Smiles and Puppies
This is it.
This is the end.
March 30th, 2016
Everything ends here.
Standing in front of the railway tracks, she looked back on her 18 years of life. Chin Soo remembered the day she decided to do this. She was determined, and since the beginning of this year, she tore off all pages from the calendar, the dates after March 31st.
She wasn't sure what was the main cause of her wanting to end her life. Was it her parent's divorce? Or the fact that they both fought for custody over her brother? Could it be that her brother left the country because he wanted to persue his dreams, and didn't take her with him? Was it because her parents disowned her?
She couldn't think of a reason. But she knew she's had enough.
She's had enough of her miserable life when all she wanted was to end high school and leave to good university. She didn't want to be in Daegu for the rest of her life, living in the old town. She wanted to go to Seoul, or if she could, overseas.
Depression was a bitch, and it came to her last autumn. Chin Soo's emotions survived the winter when her brother was still with her, but finally broke into a million pieces when he left, on December 30th, without leaving a trace.
The trains horn sounded, and Chin Soo walked closer to the edge.
This is the end. She just wanted the pain and suffering to end. She prepared herself, taking up 3 months of courage to make her leap in front of a running train.
The train was in sight, she closed her eyes, and a tear ran down her cheeks as she leaned forward, ready to end it all.
All of a sudden, she felt someone tug her left arm back and she helped out of surprise . She was pulled into a strangers arms before she could think of anything, hugging her by instinct.
The train ran past behind her in a flash, sending vibrations throughout the station for a few good seconds, and it was gone.
Tears wouldn't stop flowing from her eyes. It was hard, gathering courage to commit suicide. But now she has to do it all again. Thanks to whoever this is, that's she's crying in his arms—
—what ?
Chin Soo shoved the mystery man hard enough to put some distance between them as she caught his warm eyes. "Arff!" She looked down, and his dog, a tiny Pomeranian puppy just by her leg, wagging its tail excitedly as if it was lucky it barked at her to save her.
She turned her gaze back to the young man standing in front of her, meeting his brown eyes again, and it came along with a smile as he patted her head,
"Just what were you thinking, young miss?"
She was stunned for a second. She opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. The boy raised his eyebrows, and hugged her tightly. And that was all it took for Chin Soo to break into a fit of sobs. She cried and cried, screaming and crying, pounding her fisted hands on the strangers chest. She tried so hard, so hard to just end things. She was so sure suicide could end all the pain and frustration, to leave it all behind. It was frustrating, that she missed her chance . Then again, she was too shocked to speak, and she figured that crying was another way to express it.
So, how in the world did she end up in a pet cafe with this man?
She glanced through her bangs, silently looking at the man who sat in front of her, sipping his tea. The pet cafe was rather silent, since it was already past 10 with only a few people enjoying the peaceful atmosphere.
To her surprise, he was wearing the same uniform as she is.
"Are you going to drink it or...?"
He spoke, after realizing Chin Soo left her caramel macchiato untouched. Her head shot up, giving him a brief nod, before lifting her cup in both palms to have a sip
It tastes... sweet."
He smiled at her comment, before placing a bowl of dog food for his black puppy. It wagged it's tail happily as it ate its dinner.
"I'm Taehyung, by the way," said the brunet as he set down his cup, and picking up the Pomeranian, "and this is YeonTan. He's like my son, and he's very sweet."
Taehyung picked up Chin Soo's hands and pulled it closer to Yeontan, "here, pet him."
Chin Soo hesitated, before reaching out to touch the warm fur of the dog. Yeontan licked her hand with his small tongue. Chin Soo giggled at the cute gesture before retrieving her hand.
"He's cute." She commented, and Taehyung nuzzled his nose on Yeontan's before letting him continue his dinner.
"So, do you want to explain yourself, Miss..."
"Min...... Min Chin Soo. I... I go to the same school as you." She tried to avoid the topic.
"Right. I can see." He smiled, and Chin Soo figured she would never get tired of seeing him smile, "so what were you doing at the station, wearing your uniform with an extra coat and beanie with fluffy gloves?"
"I, uh," she thought of an excuse, "I was waiting for my parents to pick me up."
Lies. Taehyung knew when he sees or hears a lie.
"And you were about to get hit by a train?"
Chin Soo swallowed, "I slipped."
Taehyung sighed briefly, and looked Chin Soo straight in the eyes, "Chin Soo, I'm just going to be extra straightforward. I saw your arms when I grabbed you just now and those scars don't look like you owned a cat. And I'm not sure if you notice but I was standing behind you for quite a few minutes before you tried to jump in front of a moving train," Taehyung leaned forward, "suicide. I know the signs when I see them."
Chin Soo avoided Taehyung's eye contact and took another sip of her coffee. She didn't know what to say. It was a first for someone to say exactly what she was thinking, and by surprise it was someone she just met. Not even her best friends could ever guessed her thoughts.
Silence fell upon them for a few good minutes, Chin Soo having a small battle in her head, thinking if she should open up to a stranger she just met.
"Talking about it helps, y'know," Taehyung drank his tea, "And I want to help you."
His smile.
She told herself that it was his smile. That she could trust him. And Yeontan, too.
It was a long night, as Chin Soo opened up herself to a man she barely knew, yet she has never felt more safe with anyone else.
Because his smile was contagious, and it made her smile too.
His final words lingered in her head as she went to sleep that night, as she recalled Taehyung hugging Yeontan to his chest when he see her off walking into her house as he spoke:
"You'll never walk alone, because when you're with us, you can smile, no matter what you're going through."
And she definitely smiled a little more that night.
