"Go and take a test Kate," Mia told her as she watched her best friend being close to tears. "I can't be pregnant Mi," Kate noted in brittle voice and shake of her head. God why was she crying, she wasn't a crier. Sure she'd been through things and had learned that life was one big school, lessons to be learned. Yes, she could shed a tear here and there, but never had she felt this emotional.
"Everything will be alright," Mia assured her as she watched her friend far away trying to think of another explanation. "I'll call you when I get home," Kate told her as she ended the call between them. It was a weekend and she'd finished all her work in the afternoon already. She'd simply stayed to work on her own project. But with thoughts of pregnancy running around in her head, she hurried to the Tesco express, picked up four boxes with pregnancy tests in it and headed home. Leaving the elevator she threw her stuff on the couch, pulled her heels off and headed for the bathroom, whilst dialling her best friend. "You home?" Mia asked her as she was sat in her study at home. "Yes, bought 8 tests, what if I'm pregnant Mi?" Kate asked her as she put her phone on the sink against the mirror as she pulled out all eight of the tests.
"then I'll help you any way I can," Mia told her as she waited for her friend. Peeing on all tests she put them on the sink and waited. "Five minutes," she told Mi as she sat down on the cold tiled floor, her phone opposite of her as they sat in silence, waiting. So much weight on those tests, if she was pregnant she honestly didn't know what she'd do. She'd always made abortion sound such an easy thing, it's either do or don't, it this or that, looking at it in her scientific mind. But as she starred a possible pregnancy in the face, she realised it wasn't black and white.
"It's time Kate," Mia told her as Kate rose up with a deep breath as she walked up to the sink and watched the tests all lined up with one answer. '3+ weeks.'
"And?" Mia asked her friend when she remained quiet, she hoped that it would be negative for Kate. It would be a whole lot harder to get over Glen if she had a child of his. "I'm pregnant." Kate whispered as a tear rolled down her cheek, feeling as if the breath had been kicked out of her. "god what am I going to do? What am I going to do?" Kate started to rant as she paced back and forth in her bathroom. Mia tried to reassure her that things would be alright, but when Kate asked for a weekend to wrap her mind around things she respected that.
Kate, on the other hand, had no idea what she was going to do, sitting on the couch staring out in front of her. She was in a foreign country, one that she'd always dreamed of living in yes. But right now, it was the first time she ever felt alone in this place. And not just lonely, but so alone, she wanted to cry but she had no one to cry on. She wanted to be angry and rant and hit things, but she couldn't. She wanted Glen, to tell him that she was pregnant, she wanted his help, she wanted him to tell her that everything would be alright, but he was touring in the states as far as she was concerned.
The man she loved wasn't getting back to her before, why would he now? looking at her phone she dialled his number one more time. 'We're sorry; you have reached a number that has been disconnected or is no longer in service. If you feel you have reached this recording in error, please check the number and try your call again.' said his number and she threw her phone on the couch beside her. "Fucking bastard," Kate yelled as she pulled her legs to her chest. They'd used protection as far as she remembered, the condom must have ripped or something, it would be just her luck.
She sat there for hours on end, trying to think of a solution anything. She'd looked up the management number of the Script. A young woman had answered and assured her that Kate could expect a callback. Well, she wasn't much with that was she now.
Could she abort the baby? her dreams of travelling the world whilst doing research. Finding answers where none others ever had. She wanted to discover something great that would add to the puzzle which was life on earth and this entire system they were surrounded by. To find a new dinosaur that would be another puzzle. She couldn't do that with a baby or child. She'd never been the one to plan her life with finding a husband and have a baby. no, she'd planned her life in a matter of wanting to reach milestones in life and discovery. A child would only hold her back. But could she remove a baby, an innocent tiny baby? Glen may not have loved her as he'd told her, but she had loved him, the whirlwind romance, she'd been lost to him. She'd never experienced anything like it. they'd even talked about the future if they came back to meet up and see if they could turn their holiday romance into something new. But when she made the first call a few days after moving to London, she'd only reached his voicemail and now the number was out of service. He hadn't died, she'd looked it up, he'd been on twitter five minutes ago when she'd been on it to check. Well, she wasn't going to start talking to him through that, she was a private person.
