"It's a lot of work, I worked on that through my pregnancy and the first two years of Arthur's life, almost three years in total. It's studying the fossils we get at the museum from that era, going to dig sites, research everything to the smallest particle. It's tedious and long, sometimes you wonder if all the work will pay off but in the end, it does." she told them with a shrug of her shoulder and shake of her head.
"A colleague of mine has been researching something for the last seven years," she told them, wanting them to understand that it differed from person to person and what they studied.
"Wow, what is he studying?" they asked her and Kate could hear the honest curiosity in their voice as they asked her about it and more people joined them.
"He's been collecting leaves from all around the world. He's been able to map the climate zones by looking at the groves in leaves. Some are cartled, others are smooth. It's enabled us to see what climate was like millions of years ago. In what climate certain dinosaurs lived on earth." she explained as she saw the impressed and stunned faces around her, including that of Mark, Rina, Danny and a couple of other people.
"So you can now tell if it was hot here in Ireland when dinosaurs lived here?" Gary asked her, truly intrigued about this and couldn't wait to go and visit his hopefully soon to be daughter in law at work and learn more about it.
"Yes we actually have, I'm supposed to visit a new dig site next week in Kerry. They found fossilised leaves with the bones so because of Jacob's research we know it was a tropical climate at the time." she told them with a small smile. "a new dippy?" Arthur asked her as she shook her head with a chuckle. "No like Spinosaurus," she told him as he grinned, rubbing his hands together. "Cool, can I come?" he asked her as she shook her head. "You've got school," she told him as he crossed his arms, not too happy that he couldn't join his mum to the new dig site.
"You can come with me this summer," she told him, kissing the top of his head. "Yes." he grinned as Kate rolled her eyes.
"Did you always want to study Dinosaurs?" Danny asked her as she chuckled softly. "I was fascinated by them as a child after I saw a documentary. I must have been seven or so. it wasn't until I was a bit older than I fell in love with the history of our planet. I fell in love with space through a space project at school. I always thought I'd study space. But Geology is basically the study of all planets if you wish to look at it that way." she told them with a chuckle.
"If they go to a planet, geologists will be on that spaceship to study the next planet." she told them with a shrug of her shoulders and chuckle. "volcanoes were always my biggest interest, that's why my new research is about. and about the noise that Dinosaurs could have made by measuring their resonating chambers." she told them as they nodded their head. "that is if I can finish it with taking over from my mentor as director." she added as she finished her dinner.
"What will you do as the director?" Gary asked her as she tilted her head to the side as she relaxed into her chair. "Right now I'm still overseeing my department. Putting together the exhibits, bringing new ideas to the table to better the museum. Get my department as the best one in the world, that's what the people don't get to see." she told them with a chuckle.
"We're the best research museum in the world when it comes to fossils. My team takes great pride in it that they're asked all over the world to advise and oversee things. When I become the director, I'll be overseeing my department like I have for the last three and a half years. But I'll oversee the entire museum and the research facility attached to it, no borders for me anymore. My colleague is all too happy to be in the field." she explained as she rested her arm on the back of Arthur's chair as she looked into the faces of the people around her.
