"It's alright bud." She told her son as his eyes turned to her and she could see the fear and doubt in his eyes. "Mummy." He called, his hands stretching out to her as she took him from Glen's arms and sat down on the couch behind her. His legs on either side of her waist, she rubbed her hand up and down his back.
"What is it little man?" she asked him, seeing Glen's entire family watching her and it was enough to her a little unnerved. Now she knew what it felt like to be an exhibit. Arthur's face was hidden in her neck once more as she felt his hands on her shoulders trembling slightly.
"Why is everybody looking at me like that?" he asked her as she tilted her head sideways so she could look down at him as much as she was possible to do in his hidden spot. She didn't want him to leave his hiding spot though, she didn't want to force her son, knowing it could have the wrong effect altogether. Across from her, she could see the hurt and confused face as she rubbed her hand on her son's back. Maybe coming here hadn't been one of her best ideas.
"You remember when we told you Glen was your Daddy?" she asked him softly and she could feel him nod his head. "Well." she started with a shudder. "these people are his mum and dad. Just like gran and gramps back in Belgium." she told him, running the tips of her fingers in a soothing manner across his back.
"And the other people?" he asked her as he glanced to the side a little. "Like uncle Jesse, Nathan, Harry and Will," she explained, he didn't understand the aspect that Harry and Will weren't blood-related. All he knew was that they were his uncles and they acted like his uncles. they were his uncles in every sense of the word but blood.
"And them?" he asked as he looked over his shoulder at the rest of the people.
"Their like nana and grampy," she told him as she kissed the side of his head. She had no idea what was going on in her son's mind. He was thrown into the deep end here. "Like Carole and Micheal to George and Charlotte?" he wondered, his thumb in his mouth which she playfully pulled away.
"Yes," she told him with a nod of her head. "What do I call them?" he wondered out loud which made all the adult chuckle a little.
"Why don't you ask them?" she suggested, kissing the side of his head as she let out a sigh. Meeting Glen's eyes as he sat down next to her, he took her hand in his and gave it a small squeeze. "Why don't you meet them with daddy?" she asked him as Arthur shook his head a little. Rising from her seat with Glen's help he gave her a small smile. Even his son wasn't feeling safe enough with him at the moment as he hid in his mother's arms.
The three of them crossed the room and slowly they started to introduce all the people. It went a little easier than how it had gone in the restaurant. But still, he wasn't feeling comfortable enough to leave Kate or Glen's arms. It took them a few more minutes before he decided to get in Gary's arms and sat on his grandfather's lap. All of his family there were in tears as they got to know the little boy.
"I'm glad you came," Glen whispered when Arthur was sat between his grandparents doting on him. "It wasn't planned or anything," she told him with a small chuckle and shrug of her shoulders as she shook her head.
"Still, I'm glad you came," he told her as he turned towards her and took her hand in his, squeezing it a little. "It means the world to them." he told her as she nodded her head. "me too," she whispered as she gazed into his eyes.
Their moment was interrupted by her very annoying phone once more. If this was Kate again she was going to get her so drunk next time and take pictures and hang them all over her house at KP. "I'm going to chuck this thing out the window someday," Kate muttered as she took her phone from her handbag and noticed it was her sister Laura.
