"You have got to be kidding me!" I said while slamming my laptop shut in a sense of defeat.
"You know, they really should bring back flip phones-"
"Yes, yes. I know, the flipping of the phone is so fulfilling when you're finally done with a conversation, blah blah blah," I look up and see her sitting there with a smug look on her face, her hands around a way too large coffee. Even sitting in the back of the dark coffee shop I could see her judgmental eyes glaring at me for ruining her fun. "but that's not the point, Sky!" I've called my best friend Sky since the dinosaurs lived, and I've known her for even longer. Her real name is Skylar, but the nickname matches her eyes. "The point is, the wifi in this place just went out, and now I can't finish my history report."
I sat back in my chair and blew away a piece of my blond hair that decided to attack my face. I followed Sky's eyes and looked outside and watched the rain hit the window, barely making the road visible. "This storm better calm down soon, I don't want to spend the rest of my life trapped in an old coffee shop."
"It's not old, it's antique!" Yelled a small voice.
I looked behind me and saw the owner of the shop across the room, a short woman with almost all gray hair. She pouted as she put her hands on the counter in front of her.
"Sorry Mrs. Briggs!" I shouted back.
She looked down at the tip jar right next to her and then back up at me, practically saying her only form of forgiveness was only given when money was involved. I raised my eyebrows and she started tapping her fingers against the granite. I grudgingly shuffled in my bag next to me for spare change. I pulled out a five dollar bill and contemplated whether or not to give in to the shop owner's guilt trip. Sky jabbed her foot into my leg from under the table, and when I look up she tilted her head toward Mrs. Briggs. I rolled my eyes and walked over to the tip jar. The old lady didn't smile until I dropped the money in. I waited for a "Thank you!" but all I got was the sight of the back of her head as she walked away.
I frowned as I sat back down, Sky shook her head. "If you keep being so mean to the nice shop owner," saying the compliment louder so Mrs. Briggs could hear. "she won't give us discounts on the coffee anymore." She whispered as she sipped at the mug in her hand.
"And that would be such a tragedy!" I moaned with my hand on my heart.
"Come on Rylee, I'm serious! I don't know what I'd do without my morning drink," she looked down at her mug "actually, I know exactly what I'd be doing. I'd be teasing you! Without this stuff," she took another sip "I'd be a complete monster." As if on cue, thunder rattled the table in front of them.
"Maybe I could use you as bait to get the mean monsters out from under my bed." I grumbled.
She crumpled up the napkin on the table and threw it at me.
"You totally missed" I laughed as I turned to watch the napkin roll away on the floor toward the door. As soon as I was about to turn back around the bell on the door rang as someone walked in. Heavily soaked from the storm, he took off his rain coat and placed it on a rack. He looked around the shop until he met my eyes.
I couldn't help but raise my eyebrows in awe. His dark hair was dripping wet, yet still somehow made him look like he was carved into stone, too perfectly crafted to be real. His chocolate eyes made me feel as if I was melting.
He smirked at me and I realized I was still staring. Quickly turning back around in my seat my face turned a bright red. I looked at Sky and she had her hand covering her mouth, no doubt laughing at me.
I closed my eyes, hoping I wold become invisible until I heard voices from across the room, one of them Mrs. Briggs. I hear her laughing, he must have told a joke, I thought, he must be funny too. Before I could open my eyes again I heard someone clearing their throat over me. I look up and I see him, the beautiful boy, with a coffee in one hand and Sky's napkin in the other.
"I believe this," he put the napkin on the table. "is yours." He smiled down at me.
"Thanks, that was aimed for my head." I replied while glaring at my best friend.
"Guilty." Sky chimed in as she raised her hand.
He laughed and looked around the shop again "Well I see that no one else is here, except for the old owner-"
"Shhh!" I whispered. "She'll make you put money in the jar if she hears you!"
Realizing she might of heard him, he turns around to look at the counter. Mrs. Briggs isn't there and he looks relieved but confused. "Well, now that there's no offended lady, can I join you guys?" he laughed.
I looked at Sky for permission and she nodded her head at me.
"Of course, pull up a chair!" I said way too enthusiastically.
