"Why don't we stick with them? Maybe they could help us." Leo asks as we get a few feet from the small home. I let out a deep sigh.

"What if they were to die after we joined them? Would you really want that heartache?" He frowns. "Making friends only leads to heartbreak when they're gone." I tell him. "So we're better off on our own with only us to worry about." The boy nods, understanding exactly what I mean.
We've been through enough pain since this whole thing started. Both physically and emotionally.

Heading into the forest around the house, we begin to be more cautious with how we move. You never know when a Cannie could be around, waiting to make you their next meal.
They're like Zombies but they can run, think, and aren't actually dead. Luna walks ahead of us because they normally won't attack digs because they like to use them sometimes to find people. The other reason why is because she'll give us a warning whine if she sees anyone. Then in front of me is where Leo normally walks so I can keep a very close eye on him. I don't want to loose all I have left in this unforgiving world. As we walk next to a trial, we just behind trees and bushes just incase someone might be around. Even if they're survivors they might kill you for your food, weapons, or to save their own life. I've seen it happened before.
And the reason why we walk next to the trail and not on it is because we'd be out in the open and vulnerable to anyone hiding in the trees or also walking the trail.

•An•Hour•Later•

"Y/n." Leo whispers my name.
"Yeah bud?" I ask.
"Can I have a granola bar?" I chuckle and nod. "Sure. Let's actually take a small break."

He nods and we head a bit farther into the forest so we can take a seat and relax for a bit. Leo spots a nice spot by some lilies and basically drags me over there. Smiling, we take a seat and pull a small snack out of our bags.
Leo and I get a granola bar while I take out a pudding cut for Luna to eat.
She happily begins to lick away at the vanilla goodness as we munch on our chocolaty bars.

"If it's not safe there, then why are we going?" Leo suddenly asks with his mouth full.
"We're going because it's safer than running from house to house each day so we don't get killed. You need to be a kid. You shouldn't be walking moles each day to avoid death." I say.
"But I do-"

Leo cuts himself off as he stares behind me with widened eyes. I slowly inch my hand toward the knife in hide under my pant leg. Luna looks up from her pudding and is about to attack.

"Luna, don't." I whisper as quietly as possible. She obeys. "Lee, relax and continue talking to me. They can't know that I know they're here." His eyes turn back to me.
"I like wa-walking around all the time-me." He shakily tells me.
"Well you shouldn't." I say, cautious slide the knife from under my pant leg, accidentally cutting my leg a bit. I quietly wince. "You should want to be playing with other kids your age." I keep the knife in front of me so whoever is there can't see it.
"I do-o, but I-I love spe-ndig time with you-ou."

A leaf crunches directly behind me and I swing around. I'm about to stab them in the thigh when I feel a guns barrel pressed against my forehead.
Leo gasps with fear. Luna sits protectively by my side.

"I'm not going to hurt you."
The man says. He scratches his bald head as I am face to face with his orange beard. "I'm a survivor, but I want your packs." He motions to our backpacks. "If you don't give them over freely, then I'll use force." I look at my backpack out of the corner of my eye.

I can't give up our only food and supplies, but I also can't stab him without the possibility of getting shot in the head.

"Take them." I mumble lowly. He grabs my bag with his free hand and puts it on his left shoulder before grabbing the other one.
"Thanks for complying, I don't like using force."

Pulling the gun away from my head, he heads off in the direction we were going; with all of our stuff. As soon as the man is fully gone, I turn back to Lee. Tears are in his eyes.

He knows we're screwed.

"Don't cry." I lean in and hug him. "We're going to be completely fine." I tell him. "We'll find new bags and get new stuff." His tears begin to dampen my shoulders sleeve.
"Th-thats not it." I pull away and look at him.
"Then what's wrong?" I ask.
"Beary was in my bag." More tears fall down.
"I'm so sorry Leo." I apologize and hug him again.

Beary was a stuffed polar bear he got from grandma when he was three. The bear use to light up, but it hasn't for a long time. He uses it as a pillow every single night and loves it so so much. It breaks my heart that he no longer has that piece of home with him anymore. I let go again and wipe away his tears with my thumb. Luna's head laying on his leg.

"We'll rescue him later. For now, let's find out how we're going to get food."
He nods and wipes away the rest of his tears with his shirt.
"H-how about we go-o back to the hou-se?" I look back at the direction we came from.
"It'll be a long walk, but it's our best bet. They said they're staying there til the morning. Hopefully we can figure something out while we're there. Even if we can just get a few snacks off of them so we can continue on with our journey." We stand up and turn back the way we came and start heading to the small house.

•Forty•Minutes•Later•

As we arrive at the house again, I spot Tyler outside. He seems to be putting wooden planks over the broken window. I run over with Leo and Luna close behind.

"Don't do that!" I half shout.

Tyler nearly jumps out of his skin before turning around with a hot glue gun in his hand and points it toward me. After he sees it's just us, he sighs and sits it down.

"Do what?" He asks. I stop in front of him and catch my breath.
"Put....boards..over that.." I say.
"Why?" He looks confused.
"They'll...know some-.....-one is here." I tell him.
"Oh..." He turns and pulls the two planks off the window. "Smart." After he fully gets them off, he looks back to me. "What are you guys doing back?" He raises an eyebrow.
"A mean man robbed us." Leo says with a very noticeable frown.
"Hey! Miss us?" Ethan walks over.
"We got mugged." I tell him. A sad expression takes over his once happy face.
"I'm so sorry. Come inside and I'll get you guys some chips."

We follow him in. When we enter the house I see Mark and Amy laughing in the couch. As soon as they see us they get a confused look in their faces.

"What a-"
"Mugged." I cut then off.

They scoot over and make room for Leo and I while Luna runs to play with Chica. Once we're 'settled down', the questions begin.

"How did that happen?" Mark asks.
"A man walked up behind us while we were taking a break and out a gun to my head before I could stab him." I say. "I gave over the bags because I didn't want anything to happen to Lee."
