••About•Three•Years•Later••

"Come Leo," I say as my little brother complains for the millionth time that he's tired. "I promise we'll stop as soon as we find an empty house to stay in." He doesn't respond.

I turn my head to make sure he's okay and see him slowly walking with his head down, Luna trotting slowly next to him. I frown and stop walking.

"Want a piggyback-ride?" I ask, a small smile on my face. His head instantly shoots up and he wears a bright smile on his face.
"Yes!"

I giggle and crouch down and take off my backpack to let him hop on my back. The boy does so and I catch his legs before standing back up and continuing our journey.

"Y/n," He mumbles.
"Yeah bud?" I ask.
"When are we going to get somewhere safe?" I sigh.
"I'm not sure Lee." I admit. "We've been at this for awhile now. I don't even knowing a safe place exists." There was no way I was gonna lie to him. Not with what's been happening.

When all of this started a few years ago we stayed at the house for a bit. We mostly stated upstairs because we were too scared to leave. I will never forget how the TV magically turned on and an emergency news broadcast came on.

They said that some type of...sickness was going around. At first doctors thought it was the common cold or the flu. Then people started to snap and kill others, sometimes even eating their flesh afterwards. It's in a way like the zombie apocalypse, except they're not undead and just seem like psychopaths that eat people.

I yawn and look up at the moon.

They're all somewhere up there, my family, rooting for us. I slightly smile at the thought when Leo starts to wiggle around.
"
Look Y/n!" He nearly shouts.
"Shhh!" I panic and my my hand over his mouth. "Someone could have heard you!" I whisper yell. Taking my hand off of his mouth, he points forward.
"Look." He whispers.

Following his finger, I see a small house in the distance. All of the lights are off and, just like our house was, one of the windows seem to be broken.

"Hopefully it's empty." I mumble and walk a bit faster.

When we get there, the door is wide open. Taking Leo off my back, I set him on the ground and hand him my backpack.

"Go sit in those bushes and stay there until I come back." I demand. "If someone's in there, I don't want you to get hurt." He frowns.
"What about you?" He asks. Pulling up the right leg if my pants, I grab my small knife and smirk.
"I'll stab them." I say.

Picking up Luna and him, I place them in a bush and hold a finger to my mouth to show him to stay quiet.
I then carefully walk up the stairs and enter the small white house. Right off the bat I notice a dry blood trail leading from inside the house to outside.

Hopefully they were dragging someone out and not in.

Heading into the living I see glass on the floor from the smashed window.
The place is a wreck. The furniture has been pushed all around and the TV is on the floor. A struggle definitely occurred here. Making my way to the kitchen, I see knives and broken plates all over the floor. The sink is slightly running so I turn it off and head down a small hall. I hesitantly open the first door and see it's a small bedroom. After checking it, I leave it and close the door. Next, I open a second door and see another bed room with nothing in it but a bed, nightstand, and a lamp.

Probably a guest room.

Leaving the room, I open the final door to see it's a bathroom.
It's quite small and everything seems fine. I let out a huge sigh of relief and head back outside. Thankfully the house doesn't have an upstairs or basement I would need to check.

"It's safe to come inside guys." Leo pops out of the bushes and rushes over to me, hugging my legs.
"

I'm glad you're okay." I chuckle.
"Of course I'm okay." I say, patting him on the back and heading inside with both him and the husky.  When we're inside, I close the door behind us and close the curtains over the broken window.
"You know the drill," I say. "No lights and we check the place for food."
He nods and we head into the kitchen and open the fridge. Our eyes widen at how much food is inside.

These poor people were probably some of the first to get killed.

We start pulling out certain foods that we can carry with us. There's cheese, pickles, yogurt, pudding, hotdogs, and some other good things. I also grab the water bottles and pop them into the freezer so they're cold whenever we decide or need to leave. Next we open up cabinets and only grab a few canned goods so that our backpacks won't be too heavy to carry. As we're searching through the cupboards, I find the holy grail of food.

"Lee." I call my brother over.

He walks over and his eyes go wide.
Inside are chips, cookies, and tons of other snack food. We instantly take all of it out and stuff it into our backpacks.

I'm so happy that mom bought us these unnecessarily huge backpacks a while back.

The rest that we can't fit, we take into the second bedroom.
"Hold on a second." I say, setting down my backpack and running back into the kitchen. Opening the freezer, I smile.
"I thought I saw ice-cream in here."

Pulling it out, I find two spoons and a bowl before rushing back into the bedroom. There is see Leo already munching on a bag of chips.

"They're kind of stale." He says.
"Of course they are! They're about three years old probably." I say.
"Oh yeah."

We both laugh and lay in the comfy bed, eating ice-cream and other junk foods with the dog. It doesn't take long for him to fall sleep with the dog laying on his legs. I smile and push his hair out of his face.

Poor kid.
He shouldn't have to grow up during a time like this.

Picking up all the food we were eating, I set it on the nightstand so we can have it for breakfast. I then lay my head on the pillow, turning to face my little brother. I give him a quick kiss on the forehead before also falling into a deep slumber.
