***********

A unique Spanish artist converted to Islam because he was impressed by the beauty of the Islamic architecture. He dedicated his art and talent to serve Islam.

He’s Rashid Rokhas...

He has a workshop, that’s 20 km away from Madrid, that has a lot of his amazing work that show his passion to the Islamic architecture

My main intention in my work is to show the beauty of Islam; the beauty that I witnessed in my journeys to many Islamic countries

His friend, Seif Al-Islam, tells us more about Rashid saying: “He’s a good friend of mine. I see him as a Muslim who was a head of Islam (meaning he did a lot to Islam despite being new to Islam). Since being a Muslim, he tries his best and struggles a lot to keep himself in the right path. He also tries his best to introduce Islam to this society”

Speaking about his journey to Islam, Rokhas says

I knew about Islam in early age because my grandfather knew a lot of Muslims and he lived for some time in North Africa.”

Rokhas went to Turkey to study the Byzantine architectural art. When he saw the Islamic art and Islamic architecture, he was very impressed. After this, Rokhas started to know more about Islam

When I arrived to Istanbul, I visited the Blue Mosque there and was surprised when I saw the difference between the structure of churches and that of mosques. The Byzantine churches were closed where few or no light enter and they were filled with statues. They were beautiful but they lacked illumination. On the other hand, the Blue Mosque was filled with light. It had open spaces. No statue or anything of this sort was there. The light was everywhere and I felt a great spirituality. I saw people praying and I was very impressed because they were praying in serenity. Tranquility was everywhere.”

Before becoming a Muslim, Rashid wanted to be more aware of the explanation of the Quran and its translation but he founded a lot of difficulty in translating a lot of verses that he wanted to know more about so he decided to read Prophet Mohammed’s biography (PBUH).

Destiny allowed me to have a book about the Prophet’s biography. I read the book and while reading I knew how much the prophet was affected when the revelation descended from heaven. I understood how great his responsibility was when the revelation descended upon him. I was very touched when I read surat Al-Muzamel because… I felt how the prophet was so afraid of such responsibility. This moment was what introduced me more towards Quran; I put myself in the prophet’s shoes and perceived this responsibility. I was afraid to stand in front of… in front of God carrying the burden of such responsibility on my shoulders.”

When Allah (SWT) revealed to the prophet (PBUH), there were three surahs that were concerned of different aspects in the human life. The first one was Al-Alaq that mainly talks about education when He, The Almighty says:

اقْرَأْ بِاسْمِ رَبِّكَ الَّذِي خَلَقَ (1) خَلَقَ الإنْسَانَ مِنْ عَلَقٍ(2) اقْرَأْ وَرَبُّكَ الأكْرَمُ (3) الَّذِي عَلَّمَ بِالْقَلَمِ (4) عَلَّمَ الْإِنسَانَ مَا لَمْ يَعْلَمْ (5)

Proclaim! (or read!) in the name of thy Lord and Cherisher, Who created  (1) Created man, out of a (mere) clot of congealed blood (2) Proclaim! And thy Lord is Most Bountiful,(3) He Who taught (the use of) the pen,(4) Taught man that which he knew not. (5)
