Chapter Twelve - Confrontation

I ran my fingers through my hair, tugging the roots gently. As I took a deep breath and Ella closed the door hastily behind her I paced over to the safe where all my equipment was stashed. I removed the video camera watch which had the stronger microphone (Rule #306: Always bring back-up equipment on a mission.) and tied it securely round my wrist.

I made up my mind that I needed to confront Olivia in private. If she called the police or spoke to anyone about me. We'll about Jason, that could cause serious trouble. My hands were still shaking slightly. I squeezed both hands together into a fist and turned the light off as I exited the room.

The corridor was bustling just as it had been the last time I'd ran through it. I needed to find Olivia's room which meant finding the school office. The signs were sparsely populated which made navigation challenging. There were directions for the Common Room, Dining Hall and various sports facilities but they were useless to me. I noticed a rather smart looking guy hunched over a book in what I presumed was his room. I knocked on the open door and barged in. "Hi, sorry the door was open."

His eyes flew up from his book. "Sorry." He mumbled, his forehead glistening with sweat. I observed a small purple stain under his eye which looked as though someone had tried to cover it up.

"No don't be. Is that a black eye you've got?" I knew full well that it was a black eye from the enumeration of first aid classes I'd been forced to endure.

He nodded grimly.

"Are you ok?"

He nodded again, turning away slightly as though he was embarrassed by his injury. "I'm fine, honestly. Did you want something or..?"

"Yeah, I just needed directions to the main office."

"There isn't one."

"Oh. Well where do you go if you want information then?"

"You don't." My mouth dropped open slightly at his comment. "I could try and help though."

"I just need to find a pupil. Her room I mean. Olivia Lomas."

A grin spread across his face and he raised one eyebrow. "Olivia Lomas." He paused momentarily as he thought to himself. "Room 22, floor 1."

"How do you know that?" I gushed.

"Everyone knows her room number." His face still held the bemused expression that'd appeared a few seconds ago.

"Why?"

"Oh like you don't know!" I shuffled awkwardly. He registered my genuine confusion instantly and filled me in. "All the guys are after her. She's rejected pretty much everyone in the year now but that doesn't stop them trying." He sneered greedily. I gagged internally at his blatant attraction towards her. "I don't blame them either!" The previous remorse I'd felt for the guy slipped away rapidly.

"Stay away from her." I spat quietly.

He looked taken aback by my sudden outburst. "Jealous?"

"She's sensitive alright; she doesn't need you're pathetic grovelling so just move on." I stepped forwards intimidatingly (which I admit was challenging given that I was wearing a bow tie.)

"Whatever." He shrugged.

I swivelled on my heels and shot him a glare as I stormed out of the room. Hearing his talk about Olivia like that made my blood boil. He'd made it sound so derogatory; as though she was just an object for guys to use when they wanted to. She was a goddamn more than that.

I scanned the doors that I paced past. My fingers gripped my tie and tugged it from my neck. I let it drop to the floor as I passed Room 56. Whispers darted back and forth round me when people observed me walking briskly down the corridor. I was faced with the usual giggling from girls and respectful nods from guys. "Hi Liam.' A girl I hadn't seem before cooed.

"Hi," I attempted to continue on my route to find Olivia's dorm but she stepped in front of me casually.

"You're rocking the geek chic look." She took a step closer to me and pressed her finger against my chest. "It's obvious that you're a rebel inside though."

I grinned, "Maybe I am."

"Well if you ever want to chat or whatever I'm in Room 38." She gestured to the door that she was standing in front of.

"I might take you up on that offer." I had no intention of getting into anything with the unknown girl but it couldn't hurt to have a few more acquaintances on campus. "I'll see you around then."

She nodded "Not if I see you first."

I quickly accelerated, angry that I'd let myself get distracted. The numbers on the doors were rapidly decreasing as I made my way further towards Olivia's door. My feet stopped abruptly as I reached Room 22.

I rolled my shoulders back and took a few deep breaths. I knew I didn't have long before she'd start screaming again so I needed to get in there and keep her quiet. My heart raced slightly at the thought of seeing her again but I knew that I had to focus on the mission.

I knocked loudly on the door and stepped closer so I could bundle her back inside, hopefully unseen by spectators. There was no answer so I knocked again. After a few moments I realised that the room was vacant.

I quickly reached into my pocket and pulled out the universal key that Al had given me incase of emergencies. I knew that it was an invasion of privacy but it was most definitely an emergency. The lock clicked as I pushed the door open quietly, checking behind me to ensure that no one was watching me.

I stepped into the empty room.
