I watched anxiously as doctors in long robes flew past me. Each time a doctor approached, my back would stiffen and I would lean forward, ready to stand. But, for the last four hours, none approached me. Dil sat beside me. His head was stooped over as if he were praying, and his foot was tapping non-stop.
I placed a firm, reassuring hand on his knee.
"She'll be fine." I said.
I forced a smile, but I knew that I was freaking out on the inside as well. Dil raised his head momentarily to look at me with a terrified set of blue eyes. Then, he lowered his head again. This time though, his foot was steady.
"I'll go get us some water." I whispered. Dil remained a statue, apart from the slightest nod of his head.
Down the hall, there was a water dispenser with piles of Styrofoam cups placed on top of it. I grabbed two. I placed a cup under the tap and waited. I had done this five times so far since we got here. Water wouldn't help the situation—no, not at all. But it kept me sane. I couldn't just sit there.
A cool hand brushed against mine, and I jumped, spilling some water on the ground.
I looked up. Niko.
"It was about to overflow." He said.
"Thanks," I said dryly, staring pointedly at the puddle water on the ground, "For your help."
I started to turn away, when he lightly grabbed my wrist. "Are you ready?" He said. His dark eyes almost had a ravenous look in them, as if I were a piping hot feast that he had been saving for the last nine months. I kicked myself whenever I remembered the deal we had made. I would stay on Earth with Lee and Dil for nine months out of the year, and train with Niko for three months before I had to partake in a ritual that would destroy Braka's curse and save the underworld. This ritual may or may not kill me. At least, that's what he told me.
I couldn't trust Niko, not by a long run.
"I thought when we made the deal, it meant you would leave me alone for nine months. As in no communication—ever." I whispered under my breath as I slid the other cup under the tap. I had to remember that no one else could see Niko except for me.
"Well then, how come you and Brianna talk almost everyday." I gave him a look. Was he serious? He sounded like a child.
"Just let me enjoy my last week of freedom in peace. Then, I'm all yours."
He chuckled as I walked away, "See you in hell." I could envision him grinning, flashing a set of sharp teeth.
As I was about to hand Dil a cup, a doctor finally stepped in front of us.
He had a hard set mouth and a face decorated with deep wrinkles. "Leanne has given birth to a healthy baby girl, congratulations."
Me and Dil looked at each other. His face was instantaneously lit up like a Christmas tree. He pulled me into his arms and hugged me tight.
This was probably one of the best moments I had in my entire life. For the first time in my life, I was truly happy.
That was all about to change.
