Day 23

It has been 23 days since my ship wrecked on this island. We lost two people, including the Captain, during the storm but the rest of us managed to swim to shore. We made it four more days without another casualty but the cut on James' leg had gotten infected from the water and he asked to be put out his misery. We solemnly obliged. We would have attempted to amputate but that would have just resulted in infection as well. We buried him in the jungle and marked his grave with some stones.

The men are losing hope. Our food supply is limited and our only clean water is from the rain. Luckily it rains nearly every day. The tropical climate is misleading. There is not an abundance of fruit ripe for the taking as one would think. Fortunately, a few of the crew members are skilled fishermen. If it was not for them we likely would have perished some time ago; or resorted to cannibalism.

Being the first mate I was next in line for leader. A captain's worst fear is watching his crew turn on him and each other. It is possible that eventually the heat will get to them and they will mutiny against me. For now at least, this misfortune has brought them together. The whole crew mourned the loss of our Captain; me most of all. They never understood why the Captain and I were so close, for they did not know that we were brothers. If we were still on the ship there would be some resistance to my authority. But here they are desperate for leadership and they follow my orders without question.

I am making a pledge to my crew tonight. I, Captain Kassian, will do everything within my power to keep us alive. I will do everything within my power to get us rescued. I will sacrifice myself for my crew in every way imaginable. I will not rest until we are home with our families. I will die before I give up hope. I will be a fair Captain just as my brother was. I will get us off this island if it is the last thing I do...
