Souls

 Addison was still in denial.

It all started the morning of his 17th birthday. He woke up to a completely normal and lovely spring day; or so he thought. As he walked down the stairs he began to notice something that he hadn't when he woke up. He was glowing. A golden yellow light swirled around him. Little wisps of light that seemed to dance when he moved. Addison was so startled by it that he almost fell down the stairs.

His sister, walking by, giggled before asking if he was alright. He looked up, ready to reply with a 'yes' when he noticed that she was glowing too. He sat there, with his mouth slightly agape and watched the blue swirls follow her as she walked into the kitchen. She always did say blue was her favorite color... Addison took a seat on the stairs and put his head in his hands. What is happening to me? Addison's thoughts were rambling and he probably would have started hyperventilating if his mother hadn't startled him.

"Addison! Breakfast is ready!" She yelled. Regaining his composure and convincing himself that he had been seeing things, Addison stood up and walked into the kitchen. As he stepped through the doorway, again he was caught off guard by twists of light surrounding his family members. He must have had looked horrified because his mother gave him with a concerned expression from across the room.

"Are you alright Addison?" She asked, her purple swirls diminishing slightly. It made Addison sad to see.

"Yeah I'm fine mom" he said, hoping to appease her worry. "I just had a bad dream." With that, Addison walked over the join his family at the table. In front of him, there were pancakes and bacon and all the rest of his favorite breakfast foods laid out on the table.

"Oh I'm sorry honey" his mom sympathized. "Well I know your day will only get better! I made all your favorites. Happy Birthday!" Oh right... I almost forgot it's my birthday. Addison smiled and thanked his mom for breakfast before getting ready for school. This was going to take some getting used to...

That was over two months ago. By now, Addison had grown accustomed to the trails of light following people down the halls at school but it was always exciting to meet someone new and see their soul up close for the first time. Addison's life had gotten a lot more interesting since he turned 17; to say the least. Everywhere he went was full of color. Everyone had unique colors and even though a lot of people have the same color as their base, they always have different accents and patterns. Every soul was different and Addison had come to love his gift.

He felt more connected to the world. It had a beauty to it that Addison hadn't noticed before; and not just the souls. The entire world felt brighter. Addison loved trying to draw comparisons between souls and the things that made up the world around him. Some people's souls looked like the ocean. They flowed and were consistent but concealed a storm. Others were fire; fierce and unforgiving yet beautiful and essential for new beginnings. Addison began to notice that the souls he found the most beautiful belonged to his favorite people.

One soul in particular stood out among the others; Chloe's. She was a girl from school and Addison had fallen hopelessly in love with her. Even before he could see people's souls he knew hers was beautiful. She lit up whatever room she walked into and she was so full of joy and warmth that Addison couldn't help but feel drawn to her. Once he got his gift, the pull toward her was even stronger. But it took him awhile to figure out what her soul reminded him of. Until one day it hit him while they were outside for biology; mountains.

The sun was filtering through her hair and he realized it was the exact color of the rich, nutrient filled soil that occupies the forest floor. Her soul swirled dark green like trees, gold like the sun, and light blue like the sky. She was beautiful but she could be dangerous and unforgiving when wronged. But to a select few, she was the best thing in the world. She was joy. She was adventure. She was, perfect.

As the analogy set in, Addison knew that there would never be another girl like her. And he didn't want there to be.
