"Daddy...when is she going to wake up??" I hear my little sisters voice ask.

"Any time now, baby. Any time now."

Winter Dorris, do not be alarmed. My name is Khaji, I am the artificial intelligence of the scarab that is attached to your spine.

What?!? Why are you telling me this? Where am I?

You are in St. Agnes hospital in El Paso. I am telling you this because you are new Silver Beetle. You mustn't tell anyone about my existence. I fear the ones who created me will soon be after us again.

My eyes spring open, my body lurches forward, I take in a giant gulp of air. The familiar white walls of the St. Agnes fill my vision, my father and little sister are out of the chairs they were previously sitting in and by my side in an instant. Images of the fire, the woman dying, the sound of her taking her last breath echoes in my brain.

"Honey, are you alright?" My father asks breaking of my trance-like state.

No...I don't think I will be okay. Someone just died in front of me. So I do what do best, I lie to them. "Yeah, dad. I'm okay."

A police officer comes in and asks, "Mr. Dorris is it alright if we get a statement from your daughter?"

My father looks at me and I give him a subtle nod, "That's fine."

"Ms. Dorris can you tell me what happened." The police officer asks, his voice sounding nice and polite.

Do not inform this man about what happened. He will not believe you.

"Um, I was in the field that's near the park." I state, starting to recall the events of what happened. "I heard a loud sound and when I looked around I saw a giant fire. I decided to see if there was anyone there, to see if anyone needed help. When I got closer I saw this woman laying on the ground. I ran over to her but she didn't move."

I didn't even realize I was crying until my dad put his hand on my shoulder. I continue, "I got really light headed and dizzy. The last thing I remember was hearing sirens."

"Thank you for your time, Ms. Dorris, I hope you get better. I'll have the doctor come in." The police officer says before he exits the room, shutting the door respectively as he does.

I let out the sigh I've been holding in and bury my face in my hands. My dad's probably never going to let me out of the house again. A hand rubs my back and I turn my head to my dad with a sad look on his face.

The door to my room opens and the doctor comes in, shutting the door as he does so. "So I see here on your chart it says you fainted and you have a little bit of smoke inhalation."

He looks up from the chart and then takes one look at her before he says, "You look perfectly fine to me. Mr. Dorris, I need you to sign some papers for Winters' release."

My father nods and follows the good doctor out of the room. I move my legs to the side and plant my feet on the ground. A few seconds later my father is back in the room and he's dragging me and my sister out of the room and out to his pickup truck. Once we're inside the truck I ask, "Dad what was that all about?"

"There was something off about the doctor. He was mumbling something about the Reach. I didn't trust those aliens then and I don't trust them now. If you ever see one you take off running." He states before he starts the truck and drives home.

When he pulls into the driveway and parks, I get out and help Deana out. When we get inside dad take Deana to her room and puts her to bed. When he comes back out I brace my self for the scolding I think I'm about to get. My father lets out a sigh and then pulls me into a hug, my head laid on his chest. "I am so glad you're alright. I don't know what would have happened if I lost you."

"I know dad, I'm sorry...I'll be more careful." I reply hugging him back.

We pull away and he says, "If you want I can call you in tomorrow. You should be taking it easy."

"Dad you know I can't miss school and plus I have something to do tomorrow, I can't miss it." My body swayed a little so I grabbed ahold of the side of the island. I couldn't miss work, I just couldn't.

He lets out another sigh and says, "Okay, fine, but if you don't feel good just go home. Your health is more important than school."

A small yawn escapes my lips and I say to him before I walk down the hallway, "I'm gonna hit the hay. Goodnight dad."

He gently places a kiss to my forehead and says, "Goodnight, hija."

My feet carry me to my room and I fall back onto my bed. As I drift off to sleep I hear a voice whisper in my head, "Rest well, Winter."

I totally forgot it was even there. I'm so tired I didn't even want to process what just happened tonight. I wanted to sleep and figure everything out tomorrow.

But little did I know there were more surprises in store for me.

A/N :

I'm gonna use Spanish words in the future and their translation will be at the bottom of the page like so. Just a heads up so you're not google translating everything. It takes it away from the story.

Enjoy!
