Gedeon was glad his head was bowed so his barely concealed grin wasn't obvious to Lord Jairo. He shouldn't be gloating over the Guardians' failure. Their failure would only irk Lord Jairo, but his ego couldn't accept the humans accomplishing what he had failed at.

"What do you mean the Guardians failed to take her?" Lord Jairo asked, the anger clear despite the casual way he'd asked the question.

"The Chosen who rescued her took down the Guardians."

"The Chosen who rescued the girl had stayed with her?"

Gedeon frowned at the amusement in Lord Jairo's voice.

"I wonder why."

"I think the Chosen's besotted with the girl."

Lord Jairo laughed. "Young love. Passionate but fragile. Stand, Gedeon."

Gedeon got to his feet.

"Go. Convince the boy to turn her over to the Guardians."

"He may not be willing, my lord." Gedeon was about to apologize for his insubordination in not immediately obeying Lord Jairo's order when Lord Jairo's lips curled.

"Let's see how far the Chosen is willing to go to protect the girl. Make sure he knows the girl can see you."

"Yes, my lord." Gedeon wondered if his initial conclusion that Lord Jairo was afraid of the girl was wrong. Because right now, it seemed Lord Jairo was more than happy to play games.
