I approached the entrance slowly, my steps cautious. I had a sinking feeling that trouble awaited me inside. As I walked through the door, my eyes fell upon security guards positioned beside Jake, and I couldn't help but wonder what Noah had done this time. "What's happening here?" I inquired, tension in my voice. Both Jake and Noah turned to face me, and at that moment, I could see the damage clearly. Jake's face bore a large bruise near his left eye, and a trickle of blood stained his nose. Noah, on the other hand, sported only a few scratches on his forehead."What the hell did you do, Noah?" I demanded, my anger palpable."Do you know him?" Jake asked, appearing somewhat bewildered by my presence."He's a family friend," I explained as I approached Jake. "Are you okay?" I reached out to touch his face, but Jake swiftly halted my hand, gripping my arm instead."Please remove yourself and him from our building," Jake responded coldly. "We here at the marine center do not condone violence.""Jake, please," I pleaded."I'm sorry, Emily. He's trouble," Jake said, letting go of my hand. "But I'm not him," I argued."No, but you're associated with him," Jake replied. "Please leave before I have to instruct my team to do their jobs.""What are you talking about?" I was utterly perplexed, and my confusion only deepened when Jake looked at me with a mournful expression and walked away. I reluctantly took Noah by the arm and led him out.Once we were outside, I vented my anger. "What the hell, Noah?""What did you do?" I demanded, my voice full of frustration."I was trying to protect you," he responded, his tone void of emotion."By showing up at my workplace and attacking my boss? What the hell were you thinking?""Noah sighed. "I know Jake; we met in high school. He's not good news.""Neither are you," I retorted. "You had no right to do that, Noah." Tears streamed down my face."I didn't mean to hurt him. I just wanted to tell him to stay away, but things got out of control," Noah explained."I can't believe you! Noah Flynn, you're nothing but trouble, and I want nothing to do with you!" I declared, turning away and walking in the opposite direction. "Em, Em!" I heard Noah call my name, but I chose to ignore him. It wasn't long before Noah caught up to me on his motorcycle. I continued to ignore him, and he eventually decided to leave.

Once I finally reached home, I found Elle waiting in my room. "Hey," she greeted me with a smile."What's up?" I inquired, sensing that she likely wanted a favor."Can you please, please do the booth?" she asked, her tone pleading."Oh no," I said, plopping down on my bed, too exhausted to stand."Come on, Em, you know all the boys in school are crazy about you. If you participate, we'll have at least 30 guys for sure," she argued."Nope," I replied, crossing my arms."Please," Elle begged.I remained resolute. "No.""Please," she pleaded once more, desperation in her voice.I rolled my eyes and continued with my task, "We both know you only want this booth so that you can get your first kiss."

Elle paused, anger filled her face as she stormed away. I didn't bother to follow her, she knew it was true.

I awoke that day to a message from Bethany, a girl I had recently met in my calculus class. I had no idea how I'd ended up in an advanced calculus class with seniors, including Noah. To avoid school the previous day, I'd faked being sick, so Bethany wanted to fill me in on everything I'd missed. As she relayed the news, she mentioned that Noah had been as silent as a turtle. I found her simile puzzling, but I brushed it aside. I replied with a casual "idc," to which she responded, "You don't? Really, Em?" As I was about to answer her, Bethany appeared right beside me."Hello, Ms. 'I don't care,'" she teased."Really?" I asked with a chuckle at her playful nickname. Bethany accompanied me to class and brought me up to speed on everything that had occurred. "Somebody was jealous," she playfully commented."What?" I asked, confused."Duh, he was totally jealous of Jake," she explained."No, he wasn't. It's Noah we're talking about.""Right," she replied sarcastically. As she walked away, she added, "See you at lunch, sucker." I waved her off and headed into class.Lunchtime arrived, and I got my meal before sitting at my usual table. Bethany was still in the lunch line, so I was alone at that moment. Elle and Lee walked right past me, with Elle ignoring me, seemingly too engrossed in her thoughts about him. I lost myself in my own musings, and that's when Noah sat down across from me."What?" I said, suddenly aware of his presence."I came to apologize," he began. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted...""To protect me?" I finished his sentence. Despite my anger, I wanted to forgive him, and I smiled to show that I wasn't angry anymore. Noah returned my smile. That smile... no, what was I thinking? I shouldn't fall for it again, but, against my better judgment, I did. I was entranced by his smile until Bethany took a seat beside me."Am I interrupting something?" Bethany asked, wiggling her eyebrows."No," I snapped out of my daze. "Noah was just leaving." I turned to Noah, who had clearly gotten the message. He stood up and winked at me. "See you in class.""Emily watched as Noah walked away, wondering if she would ever see him again," Bethany narrated humorously as Noah departed."Oh, shut up," I told her, crossing my arms. Bethany laughed and opened her carton of milk. "How long do you think this has been in their fridge?""About three years," I guessed."Delicious," Bethany declared, taking a sip from the carton."Ew!" I exclaimed, nearly retching. "You disgust me, Bethany Wells." As we chatted, Elle and Lee approached me."Okay, here's how it's going to go," Elle began, her tone authoritative. "You participate in the kissing booth, and I'll forget what you said to me the night before.""Are you that desperate for someone at the booth?" I asked."Yes," Elle admitted with a sigh. "No one else wants to participate, so please..."I rolled my eyes. I knew Elle wouldn't stay mad at me for long, but I also felt remorse for my harsh words. I knew she cared about him, so I did what any sister in my position would do. "Alright, I'm in.""Wait, what?" Elle asked, surprised and confused."I'll do it," I confirmed. "It's the only way you'll forgive me, right?" I winked at her, and she rewarded me with one of her biggest smiles."Thank you, thank you!" she exclaimed, hugging me a bit too tightly."Elle, not so tight, my bones are cracking," I said dramatically. She quickly released me and walked away happily. "You'll see, you're going to love it!""Kissing strangers, yay!" I said sarcastically, grinning at her."That's the spirit," Bethany quipped."Shut up," I replied with an eye roll. "Let's go. We can't be late for class.""As if you care," Bethany commented and then launched into a discussion about the latest gossip.By the end of the day, I returned home from swim tryouts. The swim coach had been impressed with me and asked me to join the team for practice the next day. I was thrilled, which kept me awake until 4 a.m., leaving me with only three hours of sleep before school. I groaned at the thought of needing tons of makeup the next morning.
