I slowly and carefully move her head off my shoulder and grab a pillow. I gently lower her head down onto the cushions. I stand up carefully and creep my way into the hallway and into the kitchen.
I walk over to the sink, considering that's where most people keep their cutlery, in the drawer beside the sink. I run my fingers along the counter until I reach to the drawer. I tap my fingers on the handle and then finally yank it open. My eyes search for the knives and as soon as they find them they light up with some type of excitement. Which I don't understand because its not like I want to kill anyone.
I run my fingers across the flat part of the knife, then I pick it up and examine the blade. I take my index finger and slide it along the blade, wincing as it cuts through my skin. I pull my hand back and wipe off the knife and my finger with paper towel. I take a deep breath and spin around when I hear a creek in the floor, I notice Sunny standing in the doorway watching me with curious eyes.
"Sunny! What are you doing up?"
"I couldn't sleep anymore." She replies as she rubs her eyes.
"Oh, okay."
"What are you doing with the knife?"
"Oh, I was just going to cut up some apple slices."
"But we don't have apples."
"Yeah, that's why I was just about to put it away, silly."
"Oh, okay!"
"Want some dinner?" I ask looking up at the microwave clock reading 7 p.m., putting the knife into the sink and opening the fridge, "Your mom made some hamburgers? It looks like." Sunny nods.
"Yes, please."
"Okay," I grab both the plates, set them in the microwave one at a time for 2 minutes. I take out the last plate and put them both on the kitchen table, "Come sit." I motion her over to the table and walk over to the fridge grabbing the mustard and ketchup and placing them in the center of the table, sitting down across from Sunny.
"Wanna play a game?"We eat silently, until I finally break it.
"Sure."
"What do you feel like playing?"
"Snakes and latters!" She says with a big smile.
"Okay, go get it and I'll clean the kitchen up, we'll play on the table in the living room while the movie finishes." I smile back. She nods and runs down the hallway, I hear her run up the stairs and down the hallway. When she comes back down I'm done cleaning.
We start the game and by the time we finish Sunny wins the game. She laughs at her amazing victory, "I win, you lose, now you gotta big bruise!" She punches my arm and grins.
"Ouch!" I sarcastically whine, "Want me to put you into your room to sleep?" I ask raising an eyebrow.
"No. I'm okay." She shakes her head as she yawns.
"Well then come lay down on the couch with me again." I walk over and lift her up, sitting her beside me on the couch again. It's so quiet. Maybe a little too quiet. I swallow hard, get up and shut the curtains with shaky hands. I sit back down and watch the rest of the barbie movie.
I really hope Jim didn't see or heard anything about tonight. I suddenly hear a car door slam shut. My eyes widen as I hear a knock at the door. I look at Sunny who is sound asleep, and slowly get up hardly breathing. I peek around the corner of the wall down the hallway, and see a dark figure at the door. The person knocks again loudly. I walk to the door, unlock it and open it.
