Nathan and I stand in complete awkwardness. Then there is another loud knock on the door. I roll my eyes and walk towards it again. The knocking kept going until I answered, I swear, I was going to punch whoever was here. I open the door. "What?" I snap as I open the door, "Stop knocking on my do-" I stop myself from saying anymore. Jim. He smirks.
"Meow! Someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning." He winks.
"Hardly." I hiss back. He laughs a bit.
"Surprised to see me?"
"No." I lie.
"Good, may I come in?" He asks knowingly that I can't say no. I roll my eyes.
"Fine." I moan opening the door wider to let him in. He walks in and stops when he sees Nathan. I walk over to them and stand beside Nathan. Jim smiles. My eyes travel back and forth between the two of them.
"Shall we sit in the living room?" Jim asks.
"Yeah." I reply, showing him to the living room. I glance back at Nathan as he shrugs and the three of us sit down.
"So, Asriel," Jim says. I look over at the man, who is now sitting in one of the chairs across the couch, where I sit.
"Yeah?"
"Have you gotten to get to know your some neighbors lately? Are they making you feel comfortable with the move?"
"I've met one," I hesitate, "I don't think I can do it. At least not for that little girl."
"You have to. You know the consequences if you don't do as your told."
"I can't just go around-" I stop and choose my next words carefully, "Babysitting all these kids."
"Aw, why not? It sounds like a lot of fun though, Jay!" Nathan jumps into the conversation. I quickly turn to him and glare at him.
"See, even your boyfriend agrees that you should, " A smile slowly creeps up his face.
"Why don't you babysit them then, Nathan?"
"Because I don't want to."
"I don't either."
"Well, your going to get paid for it."
"So would you."
"I'm already working though and getting a good pay, so I don't need to have another job." I cross my arms over my chest rolling my eyes in irritation.
"Why don't you go get us some coffee, Nathan?"
"Fine." Once he leaves, I turn my attention back to Jim.
"Oh, put an extra sugar in mine." Jim shouts to Nathan.
"So, why are you here?"
"To see how its going and if you've made any arrangements yet."
"Bu-" I get cut off.
"If you don't, I'll make your life a living hell," His green eyes grow foul as he continues, "Maybe even kill your little boy toy."
"How would you even know?"
"I have my resources. Just do as your told, you'll will be fine." His words echo in my ears. Nathan comes back with the coffee in his hands. He gives Jim his as he then smiles again and then hands me mine from earlier.
"I really do think you should babysit, Asriel." Nathan smiles.
"Yeah, I guess that would be good for me."
"So you'll do it?" He asks sitting on the edge off his chair excitedly. I look over at Jim and he lifts up his eye brows waiting for my answer. I gulp and then nod.
"Yes." I finally say. Jim claps his hands slow and sarcastically.
"Good." He replies darkly.
"Well, thanks for the coffee. I have to go now, but I'll be back in about 3 days to see how babysitting is going. And to see how well everything around here is going!" Jim says putting his cup on the table as he stands up. I nod as he grins at me. I get a shiver from his evil smile. I stand up and walk him to the door.
"Bye," I say.
"Remember what I told you. I know everything that happens around here." He whispers.
"Yeah, yeah I know." I say pushing him out.
"Good luck." He chuckles. I slam the door fast locking it. I look out the side window on the door and watch him leave.
I walk into the kitchen and notice that Nathan has found some soup that I bought a while ago for my friend when she stayed over for a few nights and is making it. I play on my phone at the small table that I own and about 10 minutes later, Nathan places a bowl of soup in front of me. I stare at it blankly.
"What? You don't like soup?" He asks cocking his head to the side. I nod.
"Not really. But I'll eat it if I have to."
"I'm not going to force you to eat it if you don't want it. I can make you something else if you want."
"No, its fine. I'll eat this." I say picking up my spoon and stirring my soup.
"Okay," he pauses and starts to laugh and I look up at him, "You stir your soup?"
"Well, yeah. Why not?"
"Alright." He says as he sits down beside me. I playfully hit his arm. I take a couple sips of my soup before pushing it away. I stand up from the table pushing the chair back with me and putting the bowl into the sink, rinsing it out.
"I guess I should pull some of those weeds in the front," I glance back at Nathan, "Want to help?"
"Sure. Why not?" He replies putting his dishes in with mine and walking to the door with me. I open the door and get blinded by the bright sun. I squint and walk down the steps.
"Can you get me my weed puller from the garage?"
"Anything for the princess." He sarcastically replies with a grin. I give him a glare, he then turns on his heel and walks back inside. I put my hand on my head with a small sigh.
I hear someone yelling at their kid nearby so I turn around. I see Annabelle motioning Sunny to hurry up. I quickly turn back around. Crap. I think. I throw the papers into the bush beside the pathway leading to the house and lean down to the garden pretending to be interested in something.
"Asriel!" I cringe at the sound of my name, look over my shoulder and fake a smile. Annabelle waves excitedly and walks over to me holding Sunny's hand. I stand up and whip off my hands on my jeans.
"Hey guys."
"How are you?"
"I'm alright," I shrug, "How about you two?"
"We're excellent. I'm so glad I saw you," She says, lifting my eyebrows up in curiosity, she continues, "You see, I'm going out tonight and I need someone to watch my little baby tonight and since all the other parents are busy, I was wondering," She pats Sunny's head and looks at me with a plead in her eye.
"If I could babysit for you?"
"Yes! So you'll do it?"
"I mean, sure, I was looking for a babysitting job anyways."
"Awesome. So you can come over around 6:30 p.m., and I'll be home around 11 p.m."
"Alright. What time is it now?"
"It's noon. Thanks sweetie."
"Anytime." I fake a smile again and watch as they walk away. I wave goodbye and walk over to the area that I want to start weeding first.
"Found it."
"Good, now we can get to work." He nods and we make our way down the driveway.
