I fix my embroidered apron, my hand reaching to touch the bright red poppy in the flower garden. I glance at the pale cottage, laced with green vines situated nicely on the wildflower field. The blue mountains line the north, the wooded forest lined the hills.
Up the stone path comes the mailman. His look is concerning, far different than his usual smile and greeting.
"Good Morning misses, much in the news today," he tells me as he walks up the garden. Here there is a choice to be notified of current events happening down on Earth.
I quickly turn and take the newspaper from him and glanced quickly,
ENGLAND AND GERMANY AT WAR
My eyes widen and glimpse back, but the mailman is gone.
Heading into the cottage, I sit at the birch table. I keep reading the headline, again and again, I take a deep breath. "I hope my George will be okay" I whisper to myself. George was my lover in the living world, we had always planned to marry and grow old together, though that was before I got sick.
"I hope this war will be over soon."
Leaving the crisp paper down on the table, I reach for my sun hat and make my way to the forest green to ponder this coming change.
-----------
George Clement Whitewood. Aged eighteen years. Dark brown hair that flops over his forehead. Seafoam green eyes. A kind smile. I always reminisce and remember him, the cheerful times I had with him before I fell ill. The thought of him being put in the war was difficult to accept, I know damn well that with the heart and soul he has, he would always serve his king and country. He always put others before himself, he did not deserve the heartache I must have put him through, especially with my slow death.
I snap back from my thoughts and a sudden soft wind blows through the forest clearing, my curls dance in the calm but wavering breeze. I know change is coming, a war no one has ever seen before.
