I woke up to the sounds of gunshots. They terrified me and my brother Aaron who was usually a heavy sleeper. We were in Russian territory, but as a Nazi with pride, I would tread through the harsh cold snow. The Russian army seemed to be no match to our German technology, however, the hurls of sleet and hail was what felt like bullets from Mother Nature to most of us, including me. I tried so hard to stay alive as I began to lose feeling from my fingertips all the way to my spine. However, Hitler still gave me hope for my country.
"For Germany!" I cheered, but no one was to answer my call. The last spark that I had of winning this world war faded as I looked over to my brother who was shaking.
"I'm sorry brother," Aaron stared at me with tears slowly turning into ice in his eyes. "But no matter how strong we may be, nature shall always prevail... such is life..." He slowly began to close his eyes as his body became almost as pale as the snow which covered us. I let out a scream of rage towards God and slowly began to take in what was truly happening around me. The trench began to look like a grave as the body counts grew. My hands began to tremble, yearning to find a paper or anything to write my letter on. Finally, I found a tissue from my comrade's left pocket. I grabbed my pen and began to write my final farewell.
"My name is Thomas Clark Moore, and this is the last letter I will write to my husband back in Germany. I want to let him know that I will no longer be with him, for I shall die in the next minutes to come. Please, whoever finds this, let my child know that she's loved up in heaven. Her father will be becoming one of the angels that she hangs on the Christmas tree and will always be with her.
There is a threat in Russia of which we can not contain yet. There are sparks of purple smoke which will fly above or into our trenches causing us to retreat. For the love of all things holy, do not let this go loose into the world. It will truly be the end of all of humanity by how it has taken the lives of so many soldiers, no matter what side that they serve.
As my final letter comes to an end, please tell my daughter once more to protect her father from harm. Be strong my daughter, daddy loves you. I love you both, my dear lover Stroheim and my young flower Anastasia. Heil Hitler."
The pen I held in my hand dropped to the earth as I saw my mother who passed on years ago kiss my forehead and carry me to a bright light. The last thing I remember was hearing the laughter my old friends as children, telling me to come play ball with them in this luminescent light. Suddenly, there was nothing for my body to be doing on Earth.
