(listen to the song on the side, and even if you finish the chapter before it's over, keep listening, it's great)
O C T A V I A
Disappointments
I sat next to my mother's hospital bed, holding her hand as she slept, anger seeping through my eyes and down my cheeks. I couldn't understand why my mother had to be the one to receive bad news about her health.
She was the one that helped me sleep at night when I had a nightmare and she was the one that rubbed my back when I was scared of the growling monster outside my bedroom door. She was the one that loved me and would do everything in her power to keep me safe, even if that meant sacrificing herself to the scary monster.
My mind was racing, but kept going over a single thought repeatedly. Why not my father?
My father was the one that hit my mom and tried to hit me. My father was the one that didn't understand the difference between rape and consent. My father was the one that didn't know discipline apart from abuse.
My father... the one that really only payed attention to the difference between whiskey and gin.
Because he was the nasty monster that stood against my bedroom door, pounding for me to help him fall asleep and for me to help him unbutton his pants.
But now as I sit in this hospital chair, and hold my mommy's frail hand, I hear a new monster pounding in my life.
Except this monster wasn't outside my door, but sitting in front of my eyes, mocking me.
And the pounding wasn't a fist against wood, but the slow beeping of the heart monitor and the horrible coughing from the one person I loved.
The one that did nothing but her best, and still received only bullshit.
